Here is a coin I’ve had for a quarter of a century, a 1877 Indian Head Cent. It still has some red and it’s in the same flip as when I bought it so I don’t want to take it out. Only 852,500 were minted and a lot less survive today. In at least VF-20 condition and easily a $1200 coin. I doubt I’d pay that today. It looks much better in hand than in these photos.
What funny about the 77 is quite a few I've seen including the xf one I sold years ago have some sort of rust or pitted...and the 77 date has no varieties! None! What so ever...
Wow!! Congrats on the achievement and the Coin is absolutely beautiful for an IHC!! I would feel proud too!
Thats good hardvto tell in the flip...but the mid to late 1870's IHC are tough dates most with issues i only need a 77 to complete the set.
I just bought a lot and got 1864-L and 1872. I think early 70s and 77 are tough dates. 77 is the key date.
That is a really nice coin. You owe it to yourself to get it certified. Otherwise, you are leaving a lot of money on the table. When I was dealer, I bought one similar to that raw. The seller and I agreed that it was an EF-45. I sent it to NGC. They called it AU-58 which was way too high in my opinion. Here the pictures of it.
That's one of the last ones I need for my slabbed IHC set. Right now I've set my limits to about $2000 which would probably limit me to EF-40 at best; probaby VF-35. By far that would be the lowest grade in my set. As @johnmilton mentioned, you should send it in to get slabbed. Your coin looks to grade at least XF-45.
Well that's ok as over the years I have owned some very rare coins some with <600 mintages. I did have a 77 years ago but sold it for a profit....and in the Wayte Raymond board there's another coin that I like just as much as a 77 ihc. And in my 16 D Mercury board there's another coin in that slot. As again the only person I need please is myself...and I refuse to put a coin thats a G-4 when the rest are vf and above. I've always leaned more towards quality than quanity....and yes if I hit the lottery damn skippy those holes would be filled....with the respective coins. But since the only lottery I ever hit was the draft ....I won't be shopping quite yet. But I am more than willing to be a part of anyones will...... show me the money...lol
