in this bag of coins i got, there is an 1876 seated liberty(i believe that is what it is.) it appears to be a dime. there are 2 problems though. 1. there is hole punched at the top of the coin. why would someone do this? 2. the back has an odd design on it. it does not match any of the ones i seen on google. it leads me to believe its a fake or replica or something. any help would be great! its in the middle of my mercury dimes, to compare size.
yes the dime it's self is real. but someone has made it into a love token. they were popular in the 19th century, the back has been turned into a decorative carving given to a loved one. the hole is where the chain would have ran through. theres a pretty good colletor market for these... nice find
i quite enjoy love tokens, sure they ruin the coin but the designs can be very artistic and intricate.
cool, i guess. its sorta neat, but sorta sad. i like the fact, that there is a history behind it. but i hate the fact that a coin from 1876 was ruined. after looking up the values though, i think it may be worth more now, then if not touched? they are selling for $35 for this exact coin and year love token. depending on condition( i have no clue how to even guess what this would be? i am going to have to read up on grading coins) they say the value is around $18 for ms4. this coin is actually in decent condition, but know telling how the original back would look.. o well, it aint all about the money for me. i think its pretty cool, and probably won't run into many of love tokens. nice conversation piece as well.
Here's one I picked up for the coin side. The homemade side needs to be fixed, like I said I like the coin side.
Love tokens on dimes are (if you'll pardon the funny) a dime a dozen. In other words, rather common. It's less common to see them on larger coins, especially dollars. Of the 21 I have in my exonumia binder, 8 are on seated liberty dimes and one on a seated liberty quarter. Three more are on Barber dimes and two on Canadian Vickie dimes. Of the remainder, two are on 1/2 dimes, one on a Swedish 10 ore, one on a late Vickie GB 3 pence, one on some German coin I've never bothered to ID (possibly a 1/2 mark), one on a small gold dollar, and one dime-sized that has no remnants of identifiable coin remaining. Most have just initials, a few have names, some just designs, all are cool.
Wow, a love token made from a gold dollar? I have never seen one of those before. Someone was either very rich or very much in love. Perhaps both! Kiss
One show I was at about 6 years ago, there was a dealer who had a few pocket pages full of them. It was really nice to look at, all that gold!
I saw one on a three dollar gold piece once. If that coin could talk, its story probably wouldn't be fit for this website.
Very nice , I'd leave it original ( dnn't fix it ) unless it really bothers you . rzage:hatch::hammer:
