It’s dated 1788 and it’s the most common variety for the year. I paid $119.00 a long time ago and my 2022 Red Book places the value at $550.00 in VG. Not sure if this is a VG or an F but it’s worth close to that so I did okay. This is the “ET LIB” INDE type. There is a small notch at the top along the rim on both sides (at 6:00 on the reverse) and it’s worn smooth so no telling what it might be from.
Wow! Nice coin overall. Nice to see a Coin from my neck of the woods. Love it for the Historical value also.
Very nice. I wouldn't know how to grade this. Taking a stab at it. There is some ED, a little corrosion not too much. A little gouge at 3 o'clock. Assuming that all of these circulated coppers will have details issues, and it doesn't count against you, F is def in the ball park, and at least VG. I think because you got this "a long time ago" the current grade would be more generous.
I assume the notch is just because they are hand made, but it could be anything. I don't think it detracts from the piece at all. I remember in grade school in the early 70's a friend brought in an elephant token, and another piece.
These are such fascinating coins! I am more into Connecticuts than Vermonts, but sure wouldn't turn this one away! Very common to find them with less than perfect color and surfaces, very nice detail on this one!
She is showing her wear as she worked for a living. This is my only Vermont Copper but some where around here I do have a few Coppers from the same time frame from Connecticut. They are more worn as I recall.
The "notch" may just be a small planchet clip. Nice example of a scarce coin from the early republic.
