@Chris B I was finally able to secure one for myself:

Darn, you went big. I only have a couple of mint state ones.

You know, the interesting thing about that is there were a LOT of AU ones that looked better than most of the MS examples.

My wildman! Not a thaler, but a nice pfennig. A great compliment to my German States collection. Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel.

Someone sent me a photo of a pretty Wildman taler. Unfortunately, it seems to have a deep knife-made test near the Wildman's leg measuring 2 cm long. They've assured me that the coin is without defects tho.

Is this normal? I'm quite apprehensive: can I send you a photo?

@Chris B - your influence rubbed off on me. Just bought this at 2023 FUN.

I liked the toning and strike (full facial features and six-pack abs on the Wildman!) The “light brushing long ago” commentary on the flip insert concerns me about its potential chances to straight-grade at a TPG, but Karl Stephens reckoned it had a 50-50 shot at straight-grading at NGC. He was less optimistic about its chances at PCGS. So I of course submitted it to NGC and shall now wait, with crossed fingers.

If it does straight-grade, it’s definitely a keeper. If it fails to, and gets a “details” grade, I’ll flip it on down the line. The eye appeal is there, regardless (at least as far as my opinion goes).

Since I’m from Brunswick (the one in Georgia, USA), it was high time I had a coin from German Brunswick.

Very nice. I wish I could have attended. Karl is a great guy. If you haven’t purchased from him in the past, he under grades everything.

Same here, my friend, though unlike you (speaking of six-pack abs), I do not burn those calories off, and thus carry way too many of them around my considerable midsection.

Rob - wonderful addition. Surfaces look quite desirable and I think that one will be a keeper for you. The detail is exquisite!

In the summer of 2022 I was displaying my Wildman collection at the Worlds Fair of Money. I was approached by someone that said he had a buddy that designed a new modern coin with a Wildman depiction. He even had an image on his phone. He got my contact info and I was hoping to hear from his buddy, but it didn't happen.

Every since then I have been checking regularly to see if I could catch one when they were released. Lo and behold, about a month ago, I found someplace that I could pre-order one. Limited to 250 pieces.

I'm not a fan of the finish. They call it a black proof. It's even darker than the image below. That's my only real complaint. The Wildman himself, on the reverse, is a good depiction.

Very nice. I was actually seeking to make a 2 oz silver commemorative coin but am not an engraver, nor do I have the time to become one. Would you know if this person can engrave the image for a coin? obv & rev?

Also, you've motivated me to try to buy a Wildman taler of my own. I bid on one with minor damage near the foot, but unslabbed. Despite going to $2,100, I failed to get it. Also looked at MA shops but the only one I liked was sold. I think the last taler I successfully purchased was in early January 2018.

I don’t know anything about the process of getting a coin made. It probably helps to know people in the industry.
You can find nice wildman thalers for a little as $500. @ma-shops is a great place to look.

What I call nice and what a coin dealer would call nice have traditionally proven to be quite different.

I really don't like the bother of returning things so I'll wait until I can see Wildmen (WildPerson?) talers in person. I've browsed MA shops and could not really find anything of interest. The one interesting Wildman I found was on Kuenker.

In my opinion, Kuenker has some of the best German States coinage, but they often cost a bit more than the other shops/auctions.

I haven't had much to add recently to this topic but have picked up two new pieces over the summer.

And this one is an upgrade to one I purchase quite a while ago. Baldwin's in England of all places sold this one to me.
