    The 47P is now an NGC solo finest at 67+. For comparison PCGS has 2 67+ with none higher. All came from a raw set compiled in the early 80’s. Everything will be going to HA for auction. 708B4F84-2785-4493-985E-890CD821B945.jpeg 108421D8-CA30-4AE1-92F6-DD6CBE4420FB.jpeg ACAB9DB7-2669-4B98-8D34-DB490FF4336D.jpeg

    Nice set, and I learned something new. I was vaguely aware of these but had no idea that they were minted for 6 years.

    Yes, minting these coins and Washington - Carver commemorative half dollars for multiple years and mints became abusive. It was one of the factors that ended the old commemorative coin series in 1954. It would not resume until 1982.

    Nice sets. Someone did a great job of picking these for the collection and taking care of them.

    The mintage figures for some of those years and mints are quite low compared to other coins, 6000 or so for a couple and that doesn't account for unsold coins that were melted or released into circulation. By the time these were released, collectors had been bombarded with commemoratives and favor had fallen off considerably from earlier commemoratives. Makes for a tough set to complete especially one of this caliber.

    I completely it several years ago but not in these grades. This set is quite an accomplishment.

    I imagine the trend started with the Columbian half (1892-1893), then the Pilgrim (1920-1921). Hard to understand with a large number of both of those ending up melted or dumped into circulation, that the mint would keep right on doing it.

    Very nice collection. Even though many were kept out of circulation, for these being raw and in such great condition shows a lot of care taken with them. Thanks for the post.

    No, the problem really started in the 1920s and especially the '30s. The Oregon Trail commemorative half is viewed by many as the prettiest coin in the series, but it was issued year after year from 1926 to 1939. There was no reason to issue all of those coins except to get more money out of collectors. Other offenders included the Boone, Arkansas and Texas.

    After Booker T. Washington and Washington - Carver fiascos, Congress was fed up. The mint was wasting its time and resources making these things, and many of them were returned for melting.

    @BlackberryPie congrats on the 67+

    Good luck on the sale. I hope you'll update this thread when these make it to the HA auction. I'm sure there'll be some interest from some of the members of CT.

    Amazed is the right word. All MS-66 or MS-67 with one exception; a lone details coin. Someone had a great eye.

    BTW, what does "obverse wheel mark" mean on the details coin?

    It’s my belief at one point the coin may have been put through a coin sorting machine and the wheel left a mark on the coin.

    I do not. It went directly from grading at the ANA show to Heritage.
