It's always good to get a fresh, perspective view from a New collector in ANY hobby. :p
This may take awhile, (as I tend to be winded) so eat dinner, get a drink, grab a smoke..or smoothie....and enjoy...:eat:
By new, I mean at least a year. That's me. Especially with coins. There is so much to digest, how many hobbies go back 2000 years? or at least with US coins, 230 + years?? Not many....
I started basically with the state quarters (like a million others), but in the middle of those, I started to look at other coins. I wanted some old, (sample coins as I call them), I wanted an example of every U.S. coin. Yes, just one example. Or type let's say. Because I was getting my state quarters from my local coin shop. (I did not realize the US mint sold coins to us mere mortals, I thought they only sold them to coin shops). How silly was that? :p
I believe Alot of people to this day think the same thing. Because why do they pay more on Ebay for something they can buy at the mint for less money?? :rolling:
OK, I am rambling, Should I go into what I did buy ? or just get to the point of the coin hobby in 2010? OK, I will get into what I did buy later.
Now, I am a researcher by trade, so no one needed to tell me to buy the book first. I bought books and books. And read forums and forums....
This was all in the last year. Do I know alot? Yes, do I know everything?, not even close.:eating:
Let's get to my Idea of the future of coin collecting....shall we? I told you I was winded...LOL.!!
OK, so, I go to my first coin show in the past year, then another, and yet Another. Now, these are basically in-state local shows....But these are the grass roots of the hobby as a whole.!!
I have read and read (as you have) about the huge shows. I almost feel as if I attended myself by the descriptions and photos.!! Thank you for those that tell us about those.!! Some of us may never attend, and we live it through your eyes, so thank you.!!
OK, First off, we collect coins as a hobby. We all have our reasons. My reason is I want to hand down a heirloom to my children, and enjoy it with them until I pass.
I am going to have to continue this on my next post , cause i see I am running out of room....my goodness why can I not just get to the point.!!
    :eek:dd:

Ok, I will try to condense my response, Dealers have 90% raw material.
It has to be 90% Slabbed. either ngc or pcgs. Coins are NOT .25 or 2.00 0r 10.00 anymore.
Dealers are quoting slabbed prices for RAW coins, they will tell you that they know how to grade coins, and they can.!!! but will they gaurentee it?
anyway, they need a mix of at least 50% graded and raw coins....that was my point all along..
thank you:bow:.........It's way to late, got to go to bed, goodnite all.

A lot of folks collect raw coins and are confident in their grading skills. Many don't believe the expense of slabbing is worth the cost. They may want to organize their collections into Dansco or other albums, and don't need or want the slabs. Also, many coins are not valuable enough to warrant the expense of grading.

    Very true Cloudsweeper.
I also believe in Raw coins, and there will always be millions of raw coins to go through.!!
I just wish dealers had more slabbed coins. I guess maybe they do at the Very big shows?

Interesting viewpoint but remember ALL shops are different. I happen to work in one that has been around over 40 years. Will my boss guarantee any raw coin? Nope.
Will he guarantee a slabbed coin. Not really when you get down to it. It's a number on a piece of plastic that was assigned by someone else.

You could send it in for regrading and come up short, or better or the same.

I have been a collector for most of my life at 47. I own VERY few slabs. I am not an investor but I would like to see my coins get better money than what I have paid for them.

I have started to slab them. Why? because if something happens to me my wife can get better money for coins in plastic (with the help of some friends) than she ever could raw.

Point is there are SO many levels of collecting. I tend to buy raw based on my own opinions. I factor in how much I want a coin. I make impulse buys to this day.

I still enjoy the hobby and the history behind it. It's a hobby after all. Enjoy it as such and keep learning.

Had to edit this. We will guarantee that a raw coin is genuine (like an SVDB for example). If a customer were to send one in and have it come back as a counterfeit we would refund the customer in full. Has never happened.

As to the future of coin collecting. I suspect that since it has been going on for thousands of years, it may well continue for at least 10 or 20 more. Even hundreds of years, maybe, possibly, I guess. If not, I'll let you know in about 100 years how it is doing. :smile:smile

I agree, we just may never know really.

I also believe it might go down hill with the new "+" signs added to the grading scale by PCGS and NGC. I think it's completely worthless to me and new collectors in general. The "+" sign is what's going to coinflate the coins.

    RAS - welcome.

I am not a silver investor but almost every topic thread on message boards recommends the American Silver Eagle coins from the US Mint. Don't know if this is the best, but would recommend the bullion message board.

Lots of old messages and topics on the subject there.

Not knowing what you are interested in my advice is to just start small.
There are many kinds and types of silver. Make a few purchases of some silver US coins like Mercury dimes, Walking Liberty and Franklin halves, maybe a Barber dime, quarter and half dollar. Look at these coins and see if anything interests you. Some of the 90 percent US coins can be bought rather inexpensively. They can be sold without much of a problem if you need to liquidate.
That said, another area to consider is the .999 pure bullion. American Silver Eagles are one of the safest [low risk] ways to own silver. Then there are the foreign coins like the Libertad, Philharmonic and Maple leaf. I do not advise getting into the Brittannia [expensive] unless you just get one example for your collection. These world coins are also fairly easily liquidated when the time comes.
Everything listed above is government minted coinage.
Then there are silver bars and rounds. I like to have a few one troy ounce silver bars on hand. Englehard and JM are a couple of the most accepted.

ok. .so i wont hide it. i am a newb to the collecting of coins. so since i saw the other newb comment i thought i would ask it in this thread. i hear that type 2 coins are signifcantly more expensicve then type 1.. for the ones like 1979 and 1981..

is this a good price for these coins .. i thought reasonable.. but just thought iwould ask non newbsa... maybe i need to buy a redbook?
