Found a :eek:dd: 1964 silver penny. Where and how do I obtain information on it? New to the site - any information would be greatly appreciated.

    And Welcome Aboard, Allison.

You can try to use the SEARCH feature here. I recall several other mentions from the past where Silver colored Cents have been considered.

Got a scanner or camera? That can entice some of the locals to express their presents and opinions.

    Meanwhile, enjoy.

Hiya Allison. I also got a silvery looking penny in a lot I bought recently. Check the rim and see if it looks clad or all copper. If it looks all copper, it could be like mine and be the victim of a science experiment. Hmmm... with all these popping up all of a sudden, I wonder if they will become collectible? LOL If it looks clad or silvery, there IS a possibility of it being struck on either a dime or foreign planchet. Pics would also help us help you.

As always, the very first thing you need to know is WHAT DOES IT WEIGH! Until you know the weight any other speculation is worthless because no matter what you suggest it might be, the first thing you have to do to check and see if that is a possibility is see if the weight allows it to be true. But if you start with the weight, it is possible to immediately eliminate a lot of possibilities.

    Eliminate possibilities by weighing something?....
Oddly enough, that's sounds like how I got rid of my first wife.
    But I digress....

It is most likely a plated Lincoln cent. If it is, it will weigh about 3.11 grams.

There is an outside chance that it is a cent struck on a dime planchet as they are encountered from time to time. If it is, it would weigh around 2.50 grams.

A cent struck on a dime planchet will be smaller in circumference by a hair and the details may be weak. If the coin looks to be the same size as a cent diameter wise and thickness wise, then it is 99.999% likely to be plated.

    Thanks,
    Bill

It might also be coated with mercury.

There are a very few 1964 Dime/ Cents or Cent/Dime mule known.
but one other option is the coin can be struck on a foreign planchet . the US mint did strike a lot of other country coinage till about 1980.
    ****A photo would help too!
