I go to the local coffee shop a few times a week. An older gentleman has taken to sit and chat will we on many occasions. One day the subject of coins came up. I told him about my incurable sickness of collecting Large Cents. He says he doesn’t collect coins be he has a few that his dad found we they lived near Boston. He stated they were found between the walls of an old house being repaired. He didn’t know what kind or how many. Well this morning he comes in and sits down and pulled coin’s from his pocket. I spy 4 flying eagles, two half dimes, a bust quarter and this beautiful 1803 large cent. I asked him if he wanted to sell them and he said not really I just wanted to show them to you. I told him I would really like to purchase the large cent. I pulled out a $50 and said will this do, he said since it’s your favorite coin it’s yours. We continued to talk over coffee and as he started to leave I told him the coffee was on me today, he just chuckled. I’m still grinning. It’s got some corrosion and a few dings but I think she’s beautiful.

Great story and a nice coin. We should all look that good at 220 years old.:)

Very nice looking cent, and a neat story. Also shows it's a good idea to have some cash in your pocket, you never know what may turn up!

I always carry cash for this reason, a $50 bill will seal the deal better than it check.

I’m not great on grading but maybe VG-8 details. The corrosion keeps it from being graded.

    Sorry, I disagree.

Anything can be graded, even if you do it.
The corrosion may get a details grade, but still graded

What a neat story! The coin looks pretty decent as well; I'd grade it out as VG-8 details (corrosion).

FYI, S-258 R1 if you're interested. There's just something about Large Cents that endears them to some of us.

ps I just got new glasses so I can see for the first time in about a year.

Glad your back and congrats on being able to see again. We need more large cents posted to cointalk. I really miss your very informative posts. I’m going to try and post more of my LC this fall. Take care.
