Well, I think maybe I'm there in terms of a "Complete Set", there are some reverse / inverted mintmarks I'll probably add but boy, this feels like an accomplishment! The rare 1918/7-S was my white whale (PCGS estimates 3000 total population) - and I finally bagged it! This budget collection started off with low grade raw coins in a blue Whitman album, years ago, when my youngest son was little (now a college grad) and I sorted through a lot of raw SLQs along the way. My 1916, 1918/7-S and 1923-S are all Details coins. My 1921 I recently upgraded from a VF25 Details to a VF20 straight graded with the CAC green bean. Most of the ICG slabs are coins I purchased raw and submitted on that wonderful Cointalk special. The goal now is to move into AU / MS and Full Head examples as much as possible. Here's the current list and pictures, thank you all for your advice, input on purchases and grades, and inspiring posts and pictures along the way. Any advice going forward? 1. 1916 25c ICG FR02 Details, Damaged 2. 1917 25c ICG EF40, Type 1 3. 1917-D 25c ICG EF45, Type 1 4. 1917-S 25c ICG VF25, Type 1 5. 1917 25c ANACS (old holder) AU50, Type 2 6. 1917-D ANACS, AU50 FH, Type 2 7. 1917-S 25c PCGS XF45, Type 2 8. 1918 25c NGC XF45 9. 1918-D 25c ICG AU50 10. 1918-S 25c PCGS AU55 11. 1918/7-S Overdate 25v NGC VF Details, Holed & Cleaned 12. 1919 25c PCGS AU58 13. 1919-D 25c ICG F12 14. 1919-S 25c ICG VF20 15. 1920 25c NGC XF45 16. 1920-D 25c ANACS VF25 17. 1920-S 25c ICG AU50 18. 1921 25c PCGS VF20, Green CAC bean 19. 1923 25c ICG EF40 20. 1923-S 25c ICG VF30 Details, Corroded, Cleaned 21. 1924 25c PCGS AU55 22. 1924-D 25c ICG AU53 23. 1924-S 25c ICG VF20 24. 1925 25c ANACS AU58 FH 25. 1926 25c NGC MS63 26. 1926-D - 25c NGC MS62 27. 1926-S 25c ANACS EF40 (old holder) 28. 1927 25c PCGS MS63 29. 1927-D 25c ICG F15 30. 1927-S 25c PCGS F15 31. 1928 25c ICG AU55 32. 1928 D 25c ICG EF40 33. 1928-S 25c ICG AU58 34. 1928-S/S FS-502, RPM-1 ANACS G4 35. 1929 25c ICG MS63 FH 36. 1929-D 25c PCGS AU55 37. 1929-S 25c PCGS AU55 38. 1930 25c NGC MS62 39. 1930-S 25c ICG AU53 40. Congratulations on completing that set. If I put one together it would be from all circulation coins. Very nice indeed.
Congratulations!! A complete set of SLQs in any grade is quite a feat. I still have about 15 left to complete mine.
Very nice, to me such a beautiful coin. How do you feel about the ICG grading? Do you think their grading was accurate? Hard to tell by just looking at the pictures.
I have found ICG tough but fair in my experience - I think they undergraded a 1921 as VF25 and assessed it as "Damaged" for some minor rim marks that I attributed to bag wear / circulation. I really appreciate the ICG CoinTalk special ($10 for US Coins, $15 for world coins / medals / tokens) and how easy it is to submit to them. Also, after my 1916 SLQ was graded and I posted bad pictures here, lol, I was able to talk to one of the graders who'd personally assessed it which was very helpful. Like ANACS, NGC and PCGS, they use two or three graders (by my understanding) to assess each coin submitted for grading. I have seen over graded and under graded coins in slabs by all four of the big TPGs - but that's just my opinion of course. I have a couple of NGCs I may submit eventually to PCGS or NGC (cracked out) that I'm pretty sure are undergraded also, including a 1909 Liberty Nickel Proof I posted for Guess the Grade here the other day. If I was submitting coins to get graded for resale purposes I'd probably use PCGS, because they tend to bring a premium in the marketplace (less so lately), but I'm just a collector, so I feel ICG is terrific - they guarantee authenticity and I respect their grades. I do plan on eventually submitting to ANACS and NGC at least, to try them out and because I want to see how they do with my medieval coins and medals. ICG also seems overly tough on medallions (I have a Pan Pac silver medal they rated an F15 that is probably a VF25-30, it's just not a great strike, which is pretty typical of those) and medieval hammered coins - they really nailed me on a Longshanks silver penny as "damaged" that is IMO just a normal hammered lousy strike. In short, I think ICG is really strong on American coins, including Colonial coppers and 20th century world coins. Here's the 1921 - with the ICG in-shop photos, you can judge for yourself:
I got a nice upgrade on my 1928-S/S FS-502 RPM-1 on a Best Offer! I've also acquired a nice 1928-S inverted mintmark FS-501 RPM-2 and a couple of other upgrades. The collection may be complete, but it is never done. That's the fun, isn't it? Does anyone else have the 1928-S 501s / 502s? I think it's interesting that 1928-S is the only one with sub-varieties that I've learned about so far (in terms of what the TPGS will certify). Of course there's also the rare 1918/7-S overdate.
Very nice I’ve thought about doing a complete set with vf 30 the target. But the cost of the 16 stops me. I just can’t justify spending that on a 20th c coin
Congratulation's on completing the set with the overdate. I have a completed low ball set on PCGS registry set (#2) and I am working on a VG-10+- set, That grade was picked because I think I can afford the 16 and 18/7-S in that grade and all other date are available, just hard to find. I have the 1928-S FS-501 that I submitted to PCGS for the Inverted mint mark but don't have the 502 certified, but I have one raw. Also have been working on a set of SLQ that have the clash marks, most notable the "E" next to Miss Liberty's right knee. From 1917 T1 thru 30-S (36 coins) I am down to looking for 4 dates. These four have no mention of clash marks in the SLQ Varieties & Errors by Robert H Knauss. The 16 with such a low mintage most likely doesn't come with the clash marks. But most of the 18/7-S do have this clash "E". There are dates with other clash marks, the 23 has the eagles beak and tail feathers. The 20-S, 26-S, & 28-S all have a interior cud (Tear drop) and the 28-S has the 'shooting star variety'. There are others but with a little research you will find out more about SLQ errors. Search "ERRORS" on eBay, refine your search to SLQ and there are a lot of different errors available for you.
