What's the going price for wheat cents?

My son got some Whitman folders and wants to do his best to fill them up. I told him I would get some bulk wheat cents next time I go to a coin shop, so I was wondering what a good price is for them? There are a few coin shops in the area I could visit quickly (my preferred coin shop is too far away to visit right now) and I don't know how fair they are so I wanted to get an idea of what I should be paying.

Every area is different. In mine about $.05 is normal. Two weeks ago I bought a bag of 300 copper cents and over 1/3 of them were wheats. I only paid $4.00 for the bag so I made out good. Best wishes.

 

I'm not sure what a good price is, but I can tell you what I've been paying for my ebay/etsy rolls. (the two don't match. )

I set my limit at $9 a roll for wheat cents when I'm in the mood to work on my Whitman. I see the typical range is from $8 to $25+ a roll (probably more, I just blank out when I see a roll going for more than $20 for some reason)

I've never bought any at a LCS though, so it might be cheaper.

edit: Ok, now I wish I had read @Collecting Nut's post before I admitted how much I'm spending online.

 

Sometimes my LCS prices common coins at low prices just to move his inventory so he move about in his shop. So many people are selling he’s running out of room. Lol

 

Five cents is about what I was thinking too. I know my favorite LCS pays 2 cents and sells for 4 or 5, or at least they did a few years ago. I know on eBay it would cost more because of shipping.

 

Your LCS is probably the best place to go. If you’re in good relations with him he may even give you a deal since it’s for your son.

 

PS. I still enjoy plugging them holes. That’s a great way to get him interested in coins and spend quality time with him.

 

My local coin club will sell them to you but the postage might be a little too much. At the club we sell them for $1.00 a roll . crnsputnam.org.

 

Yeah, he's pretty coin crazy right now. Every day I give him two foreign coins of his choice and he puts them in an album. He's learned a lot. At preschool (he's 5) the teacher would ask what words started with the letter of the day and he was always saying things like Yugoslavia and Zimbabwe.

 

I think 3¢ a piece is about right.

Someone here on CT was selling rolls not long ago, maybe post a WTB message and see who has some. Keep it in the family, as I always say.

 

Maybe try Craigslist in your area...

 

You can find them roll searching or buy them from your local coin shop.

 

My Uncle showed me some coins when I was 5 and have been hooked ever since. 50+ continuous years of collecting and learning. I loved going through change looking for dates I needed to fill my albums and finding new things in the redbook. I even took coins to elementary school for show and tell. I also learned a tremendous amount of history over the years.

I hope your child gets as much knowledge and enjoyment out of the hobby as I did.

If he hasn't already started, why not go with Jefferson nickels. You can still find 40s and 50s in change and you can source rolls at your local bank for face value.

 

Yeah, we're going to eventually get to the larger denomination coins, but we just don't want to do too much at once. He kind of obsesses over it and I want him to pace himself better. He's only five and he wants to have everything complete immediately.

Sounds like a great plan to get him involved and to keep his interest. But I see nothing wrong with having it all at once.

Today on my lunch break I went to the coin shop in town to see if I could get wheat cents there. I don't normally go to this shop because I collect foreign and they don't want to sully themselves with it, but I figured it was worth a shot for wheaties. They had them, but it was $225 for a bag of 5,000. I asked if they had smaller quantities and they said no. I didn't really want 5,000 of them so I'll keep looking. I felt like they thought I was wasting their time, but that's another issue.

 

That’s $.045 each. Maybe you should consider buying a bag and give them to your son a few hundred at a time. Just a thought. Birthday and Christmas gift as well.

 

I remember when I got these old rolls of pennies they had all these wheat pennies in them.
