Besides being a women's rights kind of girl, SBA was also big in the anti-slavery movement of the 1830's and 1840's giving up involvement in the movement of equal rights for coloreds after 1869 and focusing on women's rights only at that time.
It is funny that people don't know that some of these coins and bills are, but I have to admit before I got back into collecting in 1999, the first time I saw a state quarter with a horse on the back I was a little surprised. I hadn't heard about the program and didn't know the coins were changing. Granted I did recognize it as a US quarter and accepted them without much thought. As for halves and two's, they just don't get used much so I can see how some people are not familiar with them.
I run a restaurant here in Canada. A few of the staff know I collect coins and such and will bring coins from the till to my attention. Yesterday, the server asked me if we accept bills with a king on them. I was very interested because that would be a bill from the 30's. I was a little surprised when she handed me a newer American $20. I told her it was from the States and she said she knew that. I said they didn't have a king and she said they did. I told her they had presidents. Her answer was that they used presidents when the king was out of the country. This particular person is in her third year of university.
Great examples of why some people should not be allowed to breed.. LOL.. $3.25 divided by 7 is....... how much do I owe you?
This is no place for the political pic and comment. Please remove. Let's discuss coins and not start silly debates or try to bait someone into one.
The problem that you have is the amount of different coins & notes that circulate as legal tender, so been such a generouse guy (allways willing to help) I think you should all send me those strange ones
I agree 100% Some of my sons friends were over at the house the other day and we were all talking and looking at coins. I asked them if I gave them a $5 bill and I only owed them $.26, what kind of coins would they give me back in change. They looked at each other for a little bit and asked me for a piece of paper so they could answer me. Wow, I wonder how many people get shorted at cash registers just because they cant figure this stuff out. BTW, my sons friends are in the fourth grade.
My experiences with "non-standard" legal tender have led me to simply avoid the situations altogether to eliminate having to deal with uneducated clerks and cash register operators (remember, these are mininimum wage employees). To someone who has never seen a $2 bill or a $1 Susan B Anthony coin (and whose cash drawer has no place for them) is going to cause you a delay in getting out of the store. I long ago gave up trying to be the "great educator" for these people — it feels noble, but doesn't work and it wastes your time. Now, I simply save the stuff for my grandkids -- let them deal with it after I'm gone.
Just had a flashback to my days at the truck stop. A guy comes in and makes a purchase. I give him his change and in it was a Delaware quarter (talking 1999 here). He literally threw it across the room and cursed me for giving him a Canadian quarter. I calmly retrieved the quarter, handed it back and informed it was a U.S. quarter. He got real quiet at that point.
Yak, not to worry. Your niece could probably run rings around us academically but the real world, to them, is still a mystery. In time they'll "get it". Blonde hair has nothing to do with it. In fact, it may be a plus.....:smile
My mother would probably think it's only a dollar. If only the government sold them for a dollar each... If you want to scrap any sense of sanity you have, then you can try explaining that the Governor-General of Canada fills in for the Queen of Canada as needed since she has a few other jobs to do as well.
I learned a lot about Math growing up using money as an example. Both my son and daughter have had Math homework from school in which coinage was depicted for them to learn basic addition and subtraction. Half dollar and dollar coins were even included! All is not lost...it may just depend a lot on the quality of the school system. TC
She's really bright! She's an elementary school teacher in San Antonio. I guess kids today are growing up in a different world than the one we knew. I suppose that's true for every generation. Still, I think everyone should know how to read a map...especially an elementary school teacher!
