Cutting back service would never be considered a viable option to any other service driven business EXCEPT The United States Postal Service. They should be looking for ways to increase service which will increase revenue. How many major corporations think they can increase their profits by reducing their services?

I like that line the best. Typical government entity. If volume is unprecedented why are revenues down? I understand that transportation costs are up, but it's just so slight that the difference is minimal. I know because I work in transportation and know for a fact that the USPS and UPS get substantial discounts as opposed to other customers. The problem lies with mismanagement on an enormous scale.

Im kinda surprised but not also. I think it sucks overall cause I do get alot of packages, some especially on saturday.

As mentioned all over the net, there is other things they could have done.

I read it this way the first time as well, but I believe that they intended it to mean that the decline in both mail volume and revenue is unprecedented.

I think Saturday is a bad day to do this, I would rather see a weekday get the axe.

    100% in agreement.

Let's curl up in a ball, suck our thumb and wait for everything to get better.

By cutting services, people will go elsewhere.

The good news is that places like FedEx, UPS, etc. are probably capable to grow and take over eventually.

One alternative is to cut out Saturday delivery to businesses, but keep home delivery. Any thoughts?

UPS and FedEx are doing the lion's share of package delivery because they are specifically chosen by internet and brick and block companies to deliver their products. The USPS for some reason has ignored that venue, or has been specifically ordered to stay out of it. The USPS stays in business mainly from junk mail organizations. UPS and FedEx have never delivered unsolicited mail to me anyway.

    On a side note
When my grandma mails out a letter it goes from Arlington, SD to Huron, SD 55 Miles East and then get put into a truck to go 126 miles to Sioux Falls, SD.
So the letter travels 260 miles to get delivered to the same city and it only takes 5 business days!! [IMG]
All because it has to go through the big sorting machine.

The problem lies with lobbyists. The 'volume' they speak of is primarily JUNK MAIL! Have heard this from an insider. The little known secret is that all these companies sending flyers, free newspapers, etc... can only be charged a few cents for these very large, bulky articles of mail which account for most of the weight in the mail! They try to make up for it by raising the cost of our stamps a penny here and a penny there. But the junk mailers are never targeted for a rate increase. Despite requiring the most work and having the most weight. In fact, I've heard they haven't increased rates on them in 20+ years. That's commercial. They don't want to hurt business. Well, we all suffer then.

I knew this was coming. The mail moves all weekend even when the post offices are closed. Looks like Mondays will be a real s.o.b. for the postal workers from here on out! A 3 day work load will have to go out every Monday. They'll love having their Saturdays off but you can bet what day everybody's going to be sick on now! lol

On the contrary, I've heard the junk mail is why they're broke. I've been told a large flyer full of inserts only costs $0.03 for these places to mail. We get a free local newspaper delivered once in a while. $0.03 a piece. In the meantime, they're collecting 0.42 for a 2 ounce letter from you and me. Doesn't make sense but as long as there's lobbyists in Washington paying for promises, nothing will change. They deserve to suffer.

I could not have said it better!!

Imagine Walmart is hurting on profits so what do they do...close on Tuesdays and close earlier...CRAZY

Lower labor, lower fixed costs, raise efficiency's, raise sales or get out of the business and let someone that can.

I'll miss Saturday delivery. It really is a shame, but you know? If the Postal Service ran their operation like any other corporation had to they probably wouldn't be having all the cost over runs they're experiencing. If they had to be held accountable to shareholders you'd see a different side to them. If UPS and FDX ran their business the way the postal folks do it they would have gone under long ago. Just a suggestion, but if they got rid of all the different classes of mail/parcel post, they might be able to begin to show a profit.

 like this is the first post that isn't related to coins in this section.....if I am not mistaken we were just talking about usps switching to 5 day service a few months ago in the same area.

shouldn't these threads all be in the general discussion forum than

    Like,
So what kind of coins do you spend to get stamps...
Or did you know their machines give out SBA?

You're right. Didn't mean it in the technical sense, hence the smiley at the end of my post. More of a tongue in cheek thing as the "mods" have been extremely lenient of late......:smile

Duke, they yanked the stamp machine out of my post office about three years ago. Never could figure out why. I liked getting the little ladys as change......:smile
