I found that website for the automats they are trying to bring back. http://www.bamnfood.com They have a menu and some videos on there. It would be interesting to try if I ever get out to NYC someday.
Thanks for the link. The next time I'm in the East Village I'll look out for this place and try to let the Automat folks here know about it.
Well, this is what they have posted on their website: "Effective March 25, 2010, PCGS will begin printing on all coin holder labels an expanded barcode that takes advantage of all 22 digits (up from the current 16 digits). The expanded barcode will allow us to introduce additional information that will provide improvements in identifying and tracking inventory. We'll keep you posted on the additional information as it is developed." That doesn't sound too revolutionary, but perhaps the BIG announcement has something to do with this. We'll know in a few hours. Cheers.
How 'bout they're getting out of the business of slabbing and deciding to purchase Toyota dealerships?
I had a thought. At the PCGS luncheon last year they seemed to be real fans of the iPhone. I wonder if the expanded bar codes have something to do with a commerce solution for PCGS slabs. Maybe shooting a pic the slab with your iPhone brings up information about the coin.... maybe even to include pricing? I know Google uses something similar to this with a bar code for it's "Favorite Places" program.
Krispy, you gotta let CT know in advance if you ever get on CashCab...I think I would have to DVR that one! LMAO! I just had a vision of you and Elaine arguing in the CashCab and getting tossed halfway to your destination! :mouth:
I have seen that Cab once a long time back... they already had their vicitm(s) though... No fare for you!
TPG Service Upgrades Security, reliability, and efficiency of service are integral to quality with the TPG services. With the US mint coming out with anti-counterfeiting features in their currency every few years it is not surprising that the grading services are ramping up the security enforcement of their product. There are a few more things they could do to improve quality or accuracy of populations. Offer a lot more $$ for return of labels. To offer incentives for reholdering or re-grading. When people think those old holder PCGS coins are premium for grade or would upgrade, it affects the standardization of their product. PCGS has the best style of holder. Still it would be interesting if they tried a shatterproof glass for holder material, instead of the ubiquitous plastic material. I would also like to see a statistical analysis of the coins based on likely populations, rarity, and current price lists. For some, if the coin is "in the holder" its value has been accurately pegged. For most collectors, the coin has to be a quality that they like, whether originality and uniqueness, or bright luster and nice type.
CLCT 10.57 +0.19 (1.83%) Collectors Universe Coin Division Announces PCGS Secure Plus(TM) Service [PR Wire]
So basically it is like the star system that NGC has except there is a scan of the coin that will stay with the coin.
Its not only that, but new ""PCGS Secure Plus™."" The Most Important Innovation in the Coin Industry Since the Advent of Third Party Grading. http://www.pcgs.com/secureplus.html Its a prettier sticker, which is designed to make a collector feel like his coin is worth more or so a seller can ask more.... JMHO, worth what ya paid for it, I know...
Cheesy marketing gimmick to justify higher fees...no apparent substance. It seems aimed at the Wall Street coin investment crowd...folks with more $$ than sense.
More Competition I have had a number of coins that would have earned this "plus" designation; but I was never able to get a plus price. You submit high end coins a number of times for the upgrade--no dice. So you at least get the CAC, "plus", or star designation and get the higher price. I'm excited! Will be sending out coins overnight express, pronto! Seriously, by the same token, why not accurately describe the "dregs" coins with a "minus"? With all the ads describing the coin as PQ plus, plus, plus, or looks like a "65", there should also be ads and holder descriptions calling a "spade" a "spade"! Will PCGS also offer a "minus" grading designation, or, are they just grading all coins as "raw" and if the previously slabbed coin is determined to not be worthy of their holders, it comes back with some kind of compensation for the submitter?
No if they actually eventually expand the scanning to all submitted coins it could have a real benefit. Since the computer would recognize cracked out resubmissions grading could be held more consistant. The crack out game would be seriously shut down because the computer could flag the coin and state what the grade was last time it came through. Also if they set it up, they could have it so that if your PCGS secure plus graded coins were ever stolen, you could send the serial numbers to PCGS and if any of the coins were ever resubmitted the fingerprint would match that of a coin reported as stolen. So even if the thief cracks coins out of the holders they are still identifiable. This was one of the major selling points they made when they announced the Expert System back in 1991. It was the one good thing that I thought the Expert System had going for it.
