Not upset here at all.... just exposing your lack of knowledge ,and you giving expert advice on a subject that you evidently have no knowledge ,or can support by any references. ....to back up your post! It be a real shame if another collector took your post to be correct...and liquidated the specimen at a lost. And yes I do encourage all regardless of age...YN's first to buy a book...and understand what they are looking at before they make assumptions ,and post incorrect data....and again have nothing to back up their post.
I think you're being unfair here, Paddy. Look through both these YN's post histories, and you'll see that they have been doing their homework. @Abramthegreat didn't even say the coin had problems -- he just said "good job, assuming it's authentic". That's not arrogance, that's simple prudent caution, especially when you're starting out. @Matthew Kruse said he thought the coin had been messed with. Frankly, I had the same impression from the first photo -- the color and texture looked super-unnatural. This "was the coin messed with or not" discussion comes up all the time when people post photos that look funny, and we get spirited disagreements among multi-decade experts. I don't think either of our YNs here did anything to deserve being slapped down.
Looking from the outside and not putting words in anyone's mouth, I don't think anyone should be saying the OP's coin was definitively altered, cleaned or fake from the pictures provided. When the IHC was placed next to some Lincolns and the same weird look to the surfaces is apparent on all, it seems to be the quality of the photos IMO
Correct...as this post wasn't posted to start a fight...but however many times on here I see people giving advise that they know not what they speak...a AT coin...of its so pretty etc.etc..no idea if its At,or NT. Others giving advise on a cleaned or whizzed coin...telling the poster it looks unc. Beatiful...Well yeah its been polished so bright it coild be a signal mirror! At 68 I am still a student in life....as well Numastics, and many other subjects that I am not an "expert." In fact that word sort of turns me off...as if you know it all.... then in my mind your life is done. As you know it all...and there's nothing left to achieve.
Well true Larry...but when the stewardess comes out of the cockpit and ask ...is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane.... lets hope their experience is a tad bit more than playing an xbox. It's ok not to answer or post if you know not what your posting! It is no credit to the forum,or its membership when someone gives the wrong information, because they don't know the correct answer.
Thanks @-jeffB Funny you mention that, I've actually flown a glider plane twice. I haven't played xbox in years. Please refrain from making generalizations about me (and the other YNs on this forum) because of my age. I may be 17, but I have bought and sold thousands of dollars worth of coins, US and foreign, and I plan to continue as I get older.
I was only talking about one YN on this forum, and it wasn't a generalization it was a fact...as ..giving mis and dis information....to another member. I find it entertaining you wanting respect of others as well acceptance for being mature, yet still cannot fill those shoes ,as you cannot accept that you were ,and are still 100% wrong.
I have been in this hobby full time for just under 60 years. To be honest I thought the coin had been messed with from the first image. I changed my mind because of the second image. I have a young friend that was teaching me how to image coins when he was 15. At 18 he was a pilot and going to MIT. Mark Feld started teaching him the hobby at a young age. Today, the young man knows more than I ever will. You just never know.
Jeff I can appreciate your input to this situation....it may of come off as a smack down...however it was a teaching moment. I have noticed as well been made aware of on other forums that post are made here on CT that are far from fact, yet never corrected. As a member here for more than a decade I finf that very disheartening as I know the caliber of the membership here... Unfortunately the YN put a foot in mouth buy posting I knew was 100% incorrect. And guess what we all make errors and mistakes...as myself was schooled by Lord M yesterday on a Spanish coin...that was posted by a member in reference to a lamination error. As I didn't see the date and asked if the area in question was where the date had been. Rob corrected my lack of knowledge and guess what I accepted the fact I was wrong....didnt go kicking and screaming and post after post try and convince others I was right. As in fact I wasn't I completely missed that the day was in writting not in digits. Again you see I was WRONG! and admitting such does make me anything but corrected. As well schooled to now know I wont make that mistake again. If you want to run with the big dogs you must know your place in the pack...and you must want to know that making a mistake isnt the end of the world..but to accept and move on. I have learned more in life by my mistakes, than I ever learned in college. Some refer to it as the school of hard knocks....of which I will admit I was a student. And again that didn't hurt at all. As it is the truth....and in life we must accept our down falls and learn from them. Its the mature thing to do...and if one wants to be accepted by their peers one needs to accept as well learn. I appreciate your insight as well words of wisdom. As well appreciate the others input .... But again if one wishes to be accepted by their peers one must be mature to admit their mistakes ,lean, and move on...its truly not that hard. I've been doing so since someone years ago schooled me.
Speak for yourself, you condescending old goat. That's as much stereotyping as Matthew got, but in the other direction.
When we were 17 there was no digital photography, internet or personal computers beyond Steve Jobs and Woz's first offerings. So different times for sure. One of the benefits now is access to information at a much higher rate. We might have thought we knew everything, but hardly anyone would be around to disagree with us, unless we had a mentor or you got taken, then you learned the hard way. You just cannot dish out information as if it were fact based on crappy photos. Especially for higher dollar items such as condition rarities. IMO
