Boy Scouts of America Coin

Most desegregation groups, to my knowledge, welcomed people of all races. Blacks as well as whites fought alongside each other to end that horrific practice.

It's true that many organizations restrict their membership based on certain factors, many for good reason. For example, (except in the venturing program), the Boy Scouts of America restricts its membership to boys. To me, this is perfectly fine because 1) they are upfront about it (it's in their name), and 2) they have a valid reason to do so (socialization, especially during youth, is different amongst those of the same and opposite genders.)

However, there is really no reason to exclude gay youth from their programs other than religious bigotry. It's a scouting group where kids go hiking, swimming, helping old ladies cross the street, etc. It's not an explicitly straight organization made for allowing straight people to interact with each other. It's also not really an explicitly religious group either (such as a church group). Professing a belief in a god is required as part of their "honor" code, insinuating that not believing in god, or being gay, is somehow dishonorable.

They are of course more than welcome to do this, but in my mind this is actually instilling dishonor in its members, teaching distrust and hatred. It is for this reason that I find the organization dishonorable.

However, your point is well-taken and I really do appreciate you for voicing it respectfully. You are correct in pointing out organizations that discriminate for legitimate reasons. And I admit that there is a fine line between acceptable and unacceptable discrimination in regards to a group's membership. That line will be placed differently for all of us. So this is my opinion: I do not accept the BSA's anti-gay, anti-atheist policy feeling that it is not relevant to the organization's activities as a whole. Therefore, I do not support them and I will not be buying this coin to show my support.

And I think that is all I have to say on the matter!

I see no problem with that. Now if you are confusing gay with pedophile that would be a different matter (And most pedophiles are usually straight. Which is only logical because there are many more people who are straight than gay. Maybe we shouldn't let the boys go camping with straight men?)

You have that much against athiests?

Neither do I, but exactly what is (a) sin? Usually "sin" is only defined based on opinions based on a religion, either explicitly or through subtle long term indoctrination. This means the same action is or is not a sin depending on who is viewing it and what their religious background or culture is. The best true definition of "sin" that I know is from Robert Heinlein, "The only real sin is hurting someone else unnecessarily. Hurting someone else when it is necessary is not a sin. Hurting ones own self is not a sin, just stupid."

I suspect this statement comes from the misguided notion that being uncomfortable with gays originates in religion. This is not so. The most homophobic people I know spend equal amounts of time ridiculing gays and the church.

The quote above is dangerous close to bigotry itself.

A straight man would not molest a boy. If he did, there is no way one would call him straight.

I respect you greatly, Mike, but I think we should slam dunk the daylights out of that one.

Ok, so it's just plain old regular bigotry then. It is true that there are some people who are prejudiced against gay people with no religious motivation but this isn't the majority. Most anti-gay rhetoric is steeped in religious ideology. Either way it's hurtful: you need not be uncomfortable around a gay person because a gay person is not going to do anything to you (unlike being around, say, a serial killer).

And sexual orientation and pedophiliac attraction are actually not linked at all. Male pedophiles who are otherwise attracted to adult women can target children of their own sex. In psychological studies of child molestations, the victim's gender is not seen as indicative of the sexual orientation of the attacker. (http://www.religioustolerance.org/hom_chil.htm)

I have a great idea. Lets re-post the thread as a separate topic again and we can all move over to it. Then we will leave all the nuts here, and they can continue their assault on one another. They won't even know were are gone.

If people have strong feelings about the content of a coin, I'm all for discussing it in a coin forum! I think the VERY strong opinions were presented in a (pardon the sexism!) "gentlemanly way!" (for the most part!) If the Franklin Mint were putting out this commemorative, would we be talking about it?!

If you have a problem with what I just said, pretend I only wrote this:
Three of each for me! Less than 24 Hours!

My oldest son is an Eagle scout. My 2nd son receives his Eagle on April 7. My third and final son just has a few merit badges to go. You bet I'll get a couple of these coins commemorating an organization that has helped thousands and thousands of boys grow into great citizens and great men.

If you don't like the coin, for whatever reason, be it design or personal bias against the organization, don't buy it. End of discussion.

    Seems simple to me.

"Men in general seem to be more prone to being deviants!"

I beg to differ! THIS is more sexist!:
    Men are pigs!

This is a quote from one of my wife's friends... (It might have been the alcohol talking.) Obviously, I will have to do some research. I wasn't aware that there were a lot (50%?) of female sex offenders. You've come a long way, baby!

Congrats! I hope the coin comes in time! (It'll be there for sure for #3!)

I do wish my son was interested in Scouts but he has too much time invested in soccer. I do camp with him a couple times a year though.

I don't really care to comment on the political side of this since I am finding that banter a little obnoxious.
As for the coin I smell $$ on this one. The uncs are probably the way to go but proofs will do, I suspect we will see a sellout despite the 350000 mintage and there will be a lot of scouts scouting Ebay after the sell out.
