One of my favorite pass time activities is Picking varieties... I limit myself at times trying to stay with the lines...like coloring in a coloring book. Meaning I try my best not to listen to that little voice that sometimes makes one push the purchase button. Sort of like in the movies where on the right shoulder the little angel sits there...telling you no.... don't listen to the little red devil on your left shoulder.... So todays post is about a holed coin, damaged, detailed.... but very Rare! How rare is that? Well so rare until last Fall when I picked another one like this there was only 3 specimens known. How rare so rare there's no "R" Value assigned to this variety. So what variety have the coin gods given you not only once, but yet another one ? The {1855 o H~10 2b } Here's last Fall's find ..... And the new pick this week... Now yes its had a hole...someone pluged it.... but ... again I'm a picker, and a picker takes what one can get... No matter the condition as now there's only 5 known to exist...and 2 of those 5 are mine.... life is good .. Lets go find some more.....
There is a very strange addition to your post above. In the interim, nice find. I have cherried a number of fund finds: About #13 1864 L Indian cents, bought as no L. #5 Barber dimes, 1905 Micro O MMs Best was a 1909 S VDB, bought as an '09 S. But, none as good as yours. Congrats
A special shout out to this gentleman....as he put me on the the fish....and I hooked it... Thanks buddy you know your stuff!!!
Thanks Frank... I know you know your way around the pickers world... so much fun ...the hunt as well as the find.
No this YN gave me a heads up to a bunch of newly listed half dimes. I believe that he deserves a shout out and a thanks... at least as he knew Im hunting an 1852 o and there was 1 available.
This is what has me worried! As its in postal limbo.... as it too is a rare find last week..."the devil made me do it..... " anyone remember Flip?
I received an email from Clint Cummins ,Clint is the person that Mr. Half Dime left his web book site to after he knew he wasn't going to be able to finish. After Mr. H-10 passed Clint is now the go to guy on half dimes. He brought me up to date on this variety, now 9 specimens are known to exist 4 more than I had known of. This variety has also been renumbered from a V-2b now a V-3 the reverse is a later die state than a v- 2 b. Still a great find as its in the top 100 varities of H~10's. With only 9 specimens know to date.
Great find. Most would have just passed it off as a damaged coin, like one found in the "junk silver" box at a coin shop.
And that's the message here... look at everything...look closely as if you do ...you may be surprised at what you discover. Look everywhere on the surface, in and around the devices, are there anything like cracks,or cuds...little hints that leads you to finding a very cool variety.....and perhasp a new discovery. We only posess these medal circles for a short time....but what if your find or discover ... is something that makes your name immortal? Something after your time is done, still lives on.... not for fame....but for the passion that one once had ...leaving it for others...to follow.
I'm glad I was able to help you find a new coin. I always look closely at every Seated coin that comes into my hands. I am not sure how many Seated coins are in my collection, but it's definitely between 50 and 100.
I always appreciate anyone having my back. What I appreciate even more is knowing some YN's here have the same passion as a lot of the collectors around my age...Growing up there was always talk about the "Generation Gap" to my knowledge the only gap was in communication, understanding, and respect. Being able to talk to one another on a level playing field, trying to understand as well remember what was your life like at that age ? And being respectful to all...young as well older individuals. Numastics has so much to give... yours for the taking. I know without a doupt....it has made me better in many ways... To see the YN's here as well on other fourms having that spark of passion that numastics will ,and can give you! But witnessing the older members here, as well else where...whom do ,and have many times gone above and beyond to help YN's keep that passion alive. Lastly making a difference learning from one another, teaching an old dog a new trick...and learning from an elder's lifes experiences. Wouldn't the world be a better place...if others had a hobby, a porpose, and the passion that our hobby gives us?
