That is disappointing news, the wealthiest ancestor I have, still has the axles and tires under their house.

Many years ago, one of the hotels in Vegas had a display of these. I think it was the Horseshoe. You could have your picture taken with a million dollars. The display was there for many years.
At some point the display was taken down. Some say the notes were doctored and sold.
Please correct me if I have any of this wrong.

I never saw the "Binion's Horseshoe Million Dollar" display, but numerous photos available on the Internet, and even a mention in the "Redbook" Guide to US Paper Money, verify that it existed. The Redbook (I have the 6th edition) says the notes entered the market in the early 2000s after the Casino cut costs and removed the display. None of the sources that I've read mention any doctoring of the notes. But it sounds like they were sold and continue to sell for escalating prices. They fall far out of my league, or any league that I will probably ever enter.

This looks like an old postcard from Binion's:

The Redbook also mentions that only about 200 of these $10,000 bills remain outstanding and half of these come from the Binion's display. Only 61,000 or so were even printed.

That's it. The talk at the time was that the notes were cleaned and pressed.

I did see the display once, though I did not take a picture of it. The impression I remember is that most of the notes looked fairly worn, and were not nearly uncirculated. Given the high grades that these notes seem to be now, cleaned and pressed would be consistent with my observations.

Heck, I'd settle for finding a stack of 100 wrinkly, stained, stinky $100s.

I would like to find a one dollar bill with that serial number. I’d be satisfied.
