I'm a "Free" member of NGC and I've contacted them regarding coins / tokens that I was interested in that they previously certified, and was impressed with their helpful responses within a few days. Right now they have Premium Membership on sale, and I think I'm going to jump for the $150 credit. I have some hammered silver medieval English coins and some medals that I'd like them to grade. I've only ever submitted to ICG before, which went well, but I though they undergraded a 1915 Pan Pac medal and designated an English coin (Edward I "Longshanks" silver penny) as "Damaged" when it appears just to be normal hammered silver (when compared to NGC slabbed similar pieces that I have acquired) and so I'd be curious to see what NGC said. I also have a toned 1883 Hawaii quarter in an old little ANACS white holder that's currently EF45 that I think is a 50/53. It appears that I could submit these under the "Economy" $23 per coin / medal tier but I can't see the submission form as I'm not a paid member with submission privileges - does anyone know what they charge for shipping and insurance back per coin? I'd like to know the total cost for 10 coin / medal submission aside from the $23 (not including my shipping and insurance to them, I already know that) - I'll probably submit 10 medals / coins.

I'm well aware that PCGS slabs command the best prices, typically, in the marketplace, but I'm a collector, not an investor or dealer, and I'm not worried about that, I just want authentication and accurate grading. The Premium Membership is on sale for $99, normally $149 for a few days - "Enter code FLASHSALE before June 28, 2022, to claim your Premium membership and $150 credit." It's the credit that makes it interesting to me. This membership tier includes:
    • Full access to online resources, including the NGC Census, NGC Registry, chat boards and more (which I already have with my "Free" membership)
    • Direct submission privileges to NGC as well as its independent affiliates within the Certified Collectibles Group: NCS, PMG, CGC and CCS
    • 10% off display boxes and select add-on services such as Early Releases, special labels and Scratch-Resistant holder upgrades
    • A $150 grading credit with NGC
If anyone has any thoughts - Pro or Con - I'd like to hear them.

Considering there's been record submissions for quite some time with extended wait times, it seems their business must have slowed to offer a sale on it. PCGS has always had a tier with a much higher value than the cost of joining it, but seems weird not to just do some special vouchers or something like that

This details the shipping and insurance for returning the coins:

    https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/9688/ngc-2022-price-changes/

    And this has the tiers:
    https://www.ngccoin.com/submit/services-fees/ngc/

10 items would be a minimum of $35 (if the value is under $1,000 total; goes up from there for a higher declared value).

There is also a $10 handling fee for every submission.

And note this: "A $5 fee per collectible will apply if a complete description (including the appropriate catalog number for most tokens and medals) is not provided."

One more thing to be aware of is that you can't mix US and world coins on the same submission, meaning you would pay two separate handling fees even if shipped together (I don't see the exact terms for tokens, but it might be similar).

Also, it's interesting that NGC has lowered their offer even more. A few days ago they sent a $119 special for the $150 credit. Now it's down to $99. Those who didn't wait probably aren't too happy right now.

That's interesting - that you can't submit world coins with medals, so do you have to do 2 shipments or package them separately in the same shipment and pay $10 for each? Do all the medals have to be the same type? How do you ascertain that? Lol, sorry I'm just curious - thank you for the good information!

Every submission will have a 10 dollar handling fee. Just be aware as well that when it comes to NGC if they get that massive backlog again their site specifically states that you cannot cancel your order so once they have it you're in for the long haul no matter how long that takes

Good note, I'm aware they have a huge backlog and long wait times - I've seen a lot of discussion of that here. If I want quicker turnaround I'll use ICG with the CoinTalk special, and I like them for my SLQs and American silver and modern world silver - but I want to check out NGC with regard to medieval hammered coins and some medals because of the grades on the ones I've acquired already in NGC slabs. Is each coin / medal considered a separate submission? How is a submission defined? I'm glad I asked about this process, it's pretty confusing to me.

Submission is the totality of what fits for that submission is. The toekn medal stuff you could get the individual charge mentioned above but if you were to say send in 10 state quarters as an example if you put that as one that one would one submission with one 10 dollar fee on top of it for that

You can package them in the same box and note that you want them shipped back together. You won't have to pay shipping twice but you will have to pay the $10 handling fee for each form.

See here for an NGC rep reply:
    https://boards.ngccoin.com/topic/413346-how-do-multiple-submissions-work/

As far as medals, they can be different types but all have to be either world or US to count as one submission (I believe) and there might be some that have special rules (like large sized ones that require a larger slab could have extra costs for that slab).

NGC and PCGS are definitely more strict compared to Anacs and ICG when it comes to what can be sent in the same order (and the extra fees).

If you have specific questions, I would email and/or call NGC to be certain. I have submitted before to NGC and PCGS but I'm not even sure what qualifies at times (especially when it comes to tokens or fantasy pieces).

So does anyone actually know what one "submission" would be? Do they send it back if they decide you have multiple submissions on one form or can you just pay for it? It's a little confusing because it's not all the coins that you are submitting at once, apparently. I googled it and looked in the NGC community articles, but I'm probably not using the correct search terms. What I'm hearing is that if I have all Washington silver quarters, for example, I could submit those as "one submission" but if I had Washington silver quarters and Capped Bust halves, that would be two? Then if I had Pan Pac medals and New York 19th century medals that would be three and four, and if I also added hammered English medieval coins, that would be (even if it was more than one) another submission. If anyone knows if that's accurate or has a link to further guidance, please post same! It seems odd to me that all the coins you submit at the same time on a form are different submissions and / or that you can't list them all on the same form. It would be helpful if they would make a sample form available for folks who don't have submission privileges if the details are outlined on same. I'm thinking maybe I'll just wait until ANACS has a special that I like (and keep using ICG). This NGC stuff seems like it's not for regular collectors.

the NGC deal isn't bad at all with the credit, on the other hand you can get those same benefits except the 10% off bit with an ANA membership for $35... but you don't get the 150 credit that way either

It's not quite like you put it.
You can mix any non-gold US coins (that are valued at $300 or less) on the same submission form (like Capped Bust Halves and Washington Quarters) under the economy tier. You cannot mix Washington Quarters and English hammered coins. And you cannot mix coins and tokens/medals.

As far as I know, if you had Washington Quarters, Capped Bust Halves, Pan Pac Medals, NY 19th Century Medals, and English hammered coins, that would be three different submissions (1 for the Quarters & Halves, 1 for the Pan Pac Medals & NY Medals, and 1 for the English hammered).

yup yup good example is my present submission... 4 coins worth less then 300 each on one invoice.. the other coin being valued over 300 had to be on a seperate invoice (also at a higher cost tier) even though in the same package they will have seperate submission numbers based on the invoices

If someone were to go their route it would be cheaper to do their deal and get the extra 50 instead of paying the 35 and getting nothing. Even without the deal their 149.99 membership for the 150 credit is a better deal than joining the ANA to do so

I found out about it here - you just write "Cointalk special [your user name]" on the submission form and then economy tier is $10 per coin for US and $15 for World. I think we lucked into that because Insider is such an essential part of the forum (and is one of their senior people). I have found turnaround is 3 weeks from when I ship to them, which is pretty amazing, except last time I paid extra for them to attribute a bunch of early American stuff (totally worth it to me) and it took an extra week (also, it wasn't very expensive). Return shipping is additional of course and you pay to ship / insure as with any I imagine, unless you can submit at a show, which would be awesome. I really like ICG grading, I don't know why some folks look down on them, in my experience they are conservative. In fact, I think they're a bit too conservative on my medieval hammered coins and some early medals based on comparison with other already slabbed / graded items by NGC (3 submissions to ICG since I did my first one in 2020 - 60 coins and medals so far - mostly SLQs which has been a primary collecting focus and they are very accurate (conservative side, which I appreciate) on the SLQs).

Also, ICG does offer a photo service - and it's not the dreamy PCGS Tru View, it's pretty straightforward - check this out.

PMG sent me the same offer. Strange that with their back log, they are encouraging yet more submissions through discounted membership. Maybe the income will hire more graders? LOL
