Another Quarter with a gouge or whatever it would be called. Some of these things I find could be "something" or nothing worth keeping. I'm still in the learning curve after 50+ years of collecting. Mind you I don't collect professionally just a curious hobby. But that said I've started, a little later in life, to get a little more serious about it. So all you folks out there in the coin collecting community with more experience are a big help to those of us who could use you expertise and help. I usually go through or "search" thousands of Quarters a month just to see what I can find. Kind of a "rinse and repeat" thing. Not really spending any money. Started about 5 years ago going through $500 quarter "bricks" as I call them. Or getting some from the Car Wash or laundromat. Ok, so this Quarter I found searching has a gouge behind the date. Just strange looking when I ran across it.

@51Caveman , PMD. This did not happen at the mint. Please review the various types of Errors here.Error-Ref.com

Definitely damaged and a full sized picture of the entire coin on both sides would be good.

@51Caveman …the date is incused. This is why the rolling machine damage you see across all four numerals is not affected by the scrape, they are below the surface of the coin face. Just PMD.

I'm in the same camp as you. I collected as a kid - late 50's - got sidetracked in '66 and didn't get back in till about 2 years ago. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. As far as your coin my guess is that is was damaged by a coin rolling machine. When a coin is at the end of a roll it gets that sort of damage as the machine seals the paper. If you look you may find that same sort of damage around the rest of the coin. Happy hunting: Lou
