Darryl.you got to ink that up & get a look, the locomotive looks similar to some of the vignettes in the ABNCO Archive Series or bring it to a local print shop & see if they could do it for you.To have the die is a super pick up but to have the actual vignette from the transfer die to display of frame would be something !

That die is one of the coolest things I have seen in a while. I'd love to get my hands on one of those.

Just ordered an Echantillon Bill for $11.00 from TCOVE on eBay.
The face in the blank circle is the watermark.
(now if I can figure out how to link my purchases to Bing! money my life will be more less complete).

DaveM, your comments are very helpful to me as a new currency collector.

Looks like I might have to start collecting ABCo dies.

Your local print shop probably can't help you print this. It requires special inks and a slightly different meathod of printing. It probably was printed using a wet paper method. If a local collage has an art dept. the printmaking dept, shoild have an etchplate printing class and the teacher of that class would probably be excited to give you a hand. I know if I lived close to you I would love to help out!

Great looking sample Pennywise!!! Love the color and detail. For $11 dollars, how could you go wrong. I did see that someone bought one of his other Dies today, was wondering if it was a cointalk member?

Congrats Midas! I am sure you will like it. Some of the new Dies that Tcove has listed look nice. I will keep an eye on things he lists in the future!

Thanks Matt ~ Glad you like it!

    Rick and Bob,

I did try a standard ink used for ink pens and also an artist black acrylic paint and neither seemed to work well. The paint is a little to thick and dried quickly, the ink was hard to control coverage. I also only used hand pressure and that was about as effective as balancing a hey stack on your head. Didn't work out so well! My best bet would probably be to reach out to a local printer and see what they suggest. I hope to pick up a globe for it tomorrow. It will look nice on my desk at home!

Dave - I agree, thanks for the information. Love it when I learn something new!

    Best Regards ~ Darryl

I'm really looking forward to seeing a print, no matter how amateur it might look, off that die, Darryl!

By the way, in case there's any confusion, that Echantillon piece is a product of Banque de France, not ABNC.

Test notes are typically made for use in testing equipment such as presses or ATMs.

A specimen is an example of a type of note that is intended to be issued which is used as a model. Specimens can also be canceled notes that are sold for less than face value such as the specimen Czech notes from the 1930s

The supplies are coming, I will post pictures regardless of how good or bad it turns out. I learned a couple things from my off-the-cuff approach and Richard has given me some great advice! I will be a couple weeks before I can post results.

Darryl, I'll be anxiously awaiting,as I'm sure you are to see a printing of whats on the die, looks like a Locomotive, sailing ship with masts & dock workers handling cargo.
The vignette is defenitally transportation related,I don't have the complete ABNCo Archive series (1986 thru 1991) but if someone does they may be able to help you.
    Super....super pick up !!!!

    Here's what you've got...

Darryl, what you have is a transfer die. I've got a couple myself, including one from the same seller. They are great paperweights but, alas, not meant for printing purposes. They are "master dies" used to transfer the image to a flat plate, usually steel or copper, which is then used to print from. That requires a siderographic press which applies tremendous pressure and rolls the transfer die back and forth until there's a solid impression on the other plate.

If you print from your die the image will be reversed -- what you want is a flat plate with a mirror image. That makes a big difference if your image includes lettering. Also the impression on the transfer die is convex where you want it to be concave. So it holds the ink in exactly the opposite way you want for printing. Give it a try, though, I'd be curious to see the effect.

What you and I really need is a connection with a skilled siderographer with access to a press. I really like your image! I do own most of the ABN Portfolios and I'll see if it's in there.

Darryl: Unfortunately, your transfer die image is not in any of the following ABNCo Archive Series portfolios: '87, '88, '89, '91.

Not in the other two, either.

Dave M posted the fact that the plate is from the Bank of France and not from ABNC.

Thanks Greg, I would love to see what paper weights you have! :D I actually knew all that you posted and the new book I just added to my library has a nice illistration of a siderographic press. I still believe (all be it a reverse image) that I may be able to print from the die. I am sure quality will be a little rough but I am going to give it a good try! Saturday the 3rd of April I will give it a shot. I have received most of the stuff I need, now it's just a matter of time. Hopefully at some point I can add a plate made from a transfer die to my collection. I have seen one or two, but nothing that really caught my eye. I appreciate you guys looking for me, hopefully I will find the stock/bond image somewhere! I may have to offer some kind of reward to anyone who can find it!

    Best Regards ~ Darryl
