This was a $25 purchase from my LCS today, negotiated from $30. I tried acetone (including q-tips dipped in acetone) on the obverse and it did get some of that brown stuff off but it’s really stuck on there. Obverse does have a couple small scratches and some hairlines but the hole in front of Liberty’s chin is a planchet flaw. The variety is JR-5 which is R-3. Really liked the circcam look on this one and was glad to pick it up for $25. In fact, after I sell a couple coins I bought out of the junk silver bin, this one might be effectively free.
If you like circam go easy with the acetone and qtips. Knowing when to stop is a big part of coin conservation. Best to the new addition.
Good point. This is the way it is now - it was quite a bit dirtier when I got it. It's really stuck on there - at this point any further attempts to get it off might do more harm than good. Can't always go for 100%.
You've done well. Remember the circcam may be from the dirt and gunk built up. Go too far and you will have a dull, lifeless, possibly stained or unequally colored coin. Enjoy!
