Sometime yesterday I hit that figure. It was a bad day for me. Better now but that life. Here is a decent Two Cent Piece dated 1867. There were 2,938,750 of them minted but a lot less have survived today. This coin was not popular with the public as it was minted for 10 years. The last year only proof coins were made.
For the first time the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was on a coin with the start of this series. Two varieties exist for the first year of issue, a large and a small motto, with the small motto commanding a premium.

You read that the Two Cent Piece was not popular, but if that's true, why are so many of the late date survivors so badly worn? Many years ago, I accepted a challenge from a dealer to put together the set in EF. That means with a strong "WE," no exceptions. I could find them all except for the 1872 and of course the 1873, which didn't circulate. But it wasn't easy.

Some might say that the coins were carried as pocket pieces, and that's how they got worn. Still I think that there was a demand for the coin. The point was a lot of cents that had been hoarded during the Civil War came back into circulation. That lowered the annual mintage figures for cents, and the government probably figured that the Two Cent Piece was no longer needed.

BTW, congrats on making 54,000 posts. I have over 31,000 posts on another site, but I've been there for 20 years.

54,000 posts? Do you ever stop to reflect how much time we spend here? Maybe too much? LOL
Hope you have more of the better days than the bad ones. We can't escape the bad ones, but maybe we can find a silver lining in them. Silver? Coins? Why not? lol Feel better my friend.
    Nice coin BTW.
