As you may know from my intro, I have received some coins from a family memeber. He left me 5 of these giant silver coins, one is a rooster, etc.
Would it make sense to keep them for anything other than the value of the precious metal? I mean they are very pretty, but...........

No, other than bullion they have no other value.

Thanks. He was elderly and paid such an ungodly premium for most of this stuff. I have heard of other elderly who were basically scammed. I understand the older coins he bought, but the others seem crazy. Like I said, I have a box full of state quarters, lots of them colorized, and crazy giant nickel replicas made of silver.

were any of them official mint issues of any of the foreign mints??? if so, they may have premiums over bullion value. for example, the 1 kilo mexican libertad coin which has about $560 worth of silver bullion regularly trades for around $1000.

definitely post a list of what you have. if you came here for advice don't take the first person's comment 100% until you have some other perspectives to weigh. if you are unsure of what you have, just Google any text on the coins and look for images that exactly match and text hits that match to describe the items... or post pics of your coins here on CT and members can help you figure it out.

I agree. Some of the government issued Kilo's carry a premium. I just sold an Australian Dragon in the $1,300 range. Make sure you check around before offing them for silver price.

I was wrong I thought they were asking about private rounds.
    My bad. I was wrong.

They sound like they could be Zodiac or Lunar Coins. Please list the Countries and date.

I hold on to them for awhile as PM's are all over the map up and down ...silver is going to go higher as will gold also...Everyone thinks we are out of the woods in this messy ecomomy not me I'm holding both silver and gold just in case it tanks again only bigger this time. Look at it this way sure it's free money that has come your way....if you did not receive them you still be in the same financial spot you are now. Have a look at Kitco do a search and have a look at the 5 year chart on silver. It's up and these may be worth much more later. Now if you need the money then go for it and sell them but watch the spot prices to see when its a good time to sell. Just My Opion....Just remember this paper money won't do much for you if everything goes to hell! Just look at history as to what got the Jews out of Europe in the late 1930's Russians out of the USSR durring the late 50-70's China , Vietnam etc etc.... hard money is always nice to hold for a rainey day...

I agree, I sold some platinum for a specific purpose, but figure I will hang on to
    the gold and silver.

I will take some pictures of the coins. They really are quite attractive.

Even one kilo silver coins can have added value.
For instance, the one kilo Australian rooster comes in three different qualities:
    1. bullion quality --> closer to spot value
    2. proof quality --> numismatic added value
    3. diamond eye quality (coloured coin with a diamond in the eye of the rooster) --> higher numismatic added value
There are also other conditions that can influence the value of the coin, so you have to check carefully for each one of them.

These are the "diamond eye" ones. Promise I will put up some pictures next week.
Does everyone agree I am pretty safe just putting the post 1970 Kennedy halves with change to turn in?

It depends. Are they in MS condition. If so, and you have a lot of them, maybe get a whitman folder and make sets. You'd sell them for more as a complete set in MS condition. If they are just plain old Kennedy's in circulated condition, yeah, they are just change.

If nothing else, your relative got you interested in a new hobby.:hatch:
