Are the dollar values for certified coins from these two appraisers consistant ? I know PCGS says the valuations on their site are only for coins they have appraised. I was unable to find such a chart on the NGC site so is a MS 61 on NGC the same value as an MS 61 on PCGS ? So tricky not to get burned in this hobby, but I still love it. Any replies of knowledge on this would be appreciated. Thanks
I'll kick this off with my opinion. Soon you will hear from others that will quote much higher sales prices for PCGS slabbed coins. That the market always pays more for PCGS coins. I would encourage you to focus on the coin itself, and ignore the label, who ever's label it is. We always say buy the coin not the plastic. With that said, typically, not always, you will see that PCGS quoted valuations are higher than others. Does that make all PCGS slabbed coins worth more because they are PCGS graded? You will have to decide that for yourself. I would recommend researching completed auction values to help you in deciding what you are willing to pay for any coin regardless of who's slab it is in. Auction information is free from eBay, Heritage Auctions, TeleTrade, Numismedia, and others. Good luck.......
I'm a rookie also, though I've been collecting on and off for years. I always thought PCGS and NGC were equal in reputation. Wasn't sure if the gradings were that much different. I always accepted both. Recently I've noticed the leaning towards PCGS as the leader of the pack.
As a newbie myself, I find this excellent advice. I have begun tracking historical and current pricing on these sites so that I can: Set aside an amount for the commen I can afford based on the grade I want.(Right now MS61 is looking good) Hopefully, spot a good value with a coin that I like at a better than average price! Good luck and keep an eye out for the bargain!
As for getting a idea of the value completed auctions are usually the best (Sites like Heritage and Teletrade). The price guides provided by PCGS and NGC tend to be on the high side and I would never go by those values when buying. Generally PCGS coins do sell for more, but how much more really depends on the series. I know with Morgan dollars both TPGs tend to grade pretty much the same, so the price difference usually isn't that much. I'm not to big on Jefferson nickels, but I believe PCGS tends to be slightly stricter on grading then NGC. So the premiums for PCGS coins tends to be larger, sometimes much larger then NGC.
I think my last post wasnt as detailed as it could of be so i wanted to Give a more definitive example, Lets say you have a couple of $20 Gold Liberties or St. Gaudens in a high grade of 66 and PCGS and NGC both Graded the coin the same, You will get more for the PCGS Pedigree Then an NGC one!!
The numbers on the PCGS are, as a rule, inflated. Neither PCGS nor NGC coins usually sell for those numbers. Beware of generalities. There are exceptions. Get price points from several sources, ponder, and make a call. Use Heritage auction archive records.
Maybe. I think there is a slight edge to PCGS, but less than many think. At that level of play, the coin itself is the dominant factor. People with that kind of cash tend to "buy the coin, not the TPG".
According to the PCGS CU Forum, the PCGS price guide reflects dealer 'asking' prices...not 'getting' prices. That is why they are inflated.
Love that comment I believe NGC is stricter on special designations (FB, FS etc.) and should command a stronger price on those coins in general. I have also heard that higher valued seems to sway back and forth between the PCGS/NGC.
Uh oh, better put that glass down, I am afraid it has kool-aid in it. There are certain series where PCGS is more conservative in their grading and the prices are affected accordingly. Most of the time the premium is a result of marketing, hype, and yes, kool-aid. PCGS has a much more conservative grading policy than NGC for Jefferson nickels. In fact, they are about a whole grade more conservative. This is important because the PCGS price guide is vastly different than Numismedia wholesale for Jefferson's, but both are very accurate IMO. Just don't use the PCGS price guide for NGC coins and vice versa. The full step designation prices are another story entirely. NGC is very strict with their application of the full step designation whereas PCGS will routinely give the designation to coins that are not full step nickels. Determining the prices of high grade full step Jeffersons is all but impossible due to the disparity in standards between the TPG's, with respect to both numerical grading and FS designation. IMO, this makes the PCGS price guide rather useless and the only good indicator is past auction prices realized. PS: Numismedia does not provide a price guide for FS Jefferson Nickels.
