Deceitful ebay sellers - wheat pennies

Discussion in 'US Coins Forum' started by Kelly Langford, May 30, 2022.

  1. Yeesh!! So they can be crooks and find a work around for negative reviews. I wonder if they can have a positive review removed? Basically give them positive feedback, but write the truth.

I have only been collecting since about 2009. I was lucky enough to find a dealer. I saw some gold coins that he had and I asked him the value. I got 3 gold coins. One was a $10 eagle, and a 20 Double Eagle and a MMIX Ultra High Relief Gold Coin. The $10 Eagle came back M61, the $20 Double Eagle came back "Details', Obverse Scratched. and the MMIX, I bought it graded by PCGS MS68. I've had some people tell me that I should sell it for what I could get. I guess I'm hard headed. I think the coin is beautiful. Anyway, I am enjoying looking at my coins and I found that they are my coins and I plan to keep them as long as I am here.
You guys are a great help in having a better understanding of coins. I'm not a rick many, so I'm careful about what I have and who I tell what I have.
As always, thank you for all the information you send out to us novis's.

  5. Thanks! Happy to be here. I am loving this community so far! I just asked my uncle Randy if he had ever lived in California. He hasn't though so there are more than one of them running around out there :woot: Lol.
I looked through my emails and noticed 6 other emails that the seller sent. It says its from Ebay, but its not in my Ebay messages. That is the confusing part. I didn't even know that was an option. Is that their work around to bug buyers to leave feedback? It's all very intriguing either way.
I know its a losing battle, but I am finding it is becoming a hobby. I will likely let it go at some point, but I will be making some changes to my listings to better inform people and I am definitely going to make some videos of the ones I buy and suss out.

  6. I hope to test the local waters soon. I tend to get fixated on certain things and have a hard time letting them go. I love collecting coins. I started a collection for my goddaughter. She is 2 now and hopefully, when she is 20 she will likely have some nice coins to keep or liquidate. And yes thanks to everyone who gives their time to educate and help. This is a great community!!

  7. Oh yes. I know I was taken. I intentionally bought them to prove to others that I was taken. I hope I am wrong about it but I will video the opening and start reviewing these sellers publicly. Just have to figure out how not to get sued in the process. These guys are likely millionaires by now at the rate/prices they are selling them. ;) I sell legitimately, therefore, I am broke:woot::woot: Honestly, I am not even in the ballpark of serious coin sellers and dealers. That's why I am broke. I do this mostly to support my hobby and maybe help a fellow numismatist along the way. The thrill is the hunt.
Thanks for the welcome! I am happy to be here!!

Same here. There are numerous reputable dealers, in person or online, that I can conduct business with.

Don’t mention any names or personal I formation. If you do this just states the facts that you can support and your findings.

I hit reply once and get the same message three times. Oh boy.

  11. Yeah. I know buying them is supporting them, that's the hard part. There is likely no justice in this matter. The point of this is to fact check some folks, share a true experience(hopefully in a public enough way to have an impact) with proof to back it up. I cannot blatantly accuse someone of being a crook without proof though. If they are truly duds, then I will get my money back through Ebay guarantee. So is that supporting them? Here's hoping it isn't.
The crooks are out in all forms and if Ebay is getting their cut they don't care. There is one seller that makes about 60 dollars a wheat penny roll. They only list 1 roll at a time and show to only have one roll. Low and behold the same type of ender roll is listed a couple of weeks later with the same listing technique. Just mind blowing and intriguing. I am going into this battle with the best of intentions. I will likely lose.
I can only imagine how bad BB card market is. I annoy at least 1 in 10 people I meet on a daily basis by simply existing. There is no way that seller has 350k legitimate positive reviews without some negative reviews removed.

  12. And that sucks for the sellers who are trying to be honest and fair about their listings. We lose customers like you because of sellers like this. Nice bass btw!!

If these rolls were truly unsearched, how would they know they were all wheat cents?

  14. Precisely. That is a great point to bring up to E-bay. Also how would unsearched rolls at those dates be rolled in what looks like 80's wrappers? This seller has no qualms about misinterpreting the truth for a sale. We also don't see a side view of the rolls. The seller doesn't accept returns. That is a common belief that sellers think saves them. Just because they state no returns, does not mean they are covered if rolls are falsified. The only thing "no returns accepted" does for a seller is delay the process of the return for the buyer if the item is misrepresented.
I am going to make my prediction now. On June 6th I will receive 3 rolls. The ender coin will be a cull. If wheat pennies are present, they will mostly be 50's, I will probably get some memorials, and there will be at least one coin that is brilliant AU but it will be a deteriorated die strike or it still will only be worth face value. If I get even one memorial penny then the seller doesn't have an argument. I absolutely expect none of my findings to equal what I paid for the rolls.
The point maintained is that I will basically investigate and report and react accordingly.

  16. Yeah. I saw that earlier researching the guidelines. I suppose I will cross that bridge if and when I get to it.

Early on in your post, you ran an e-Bay seller advertising "unsearched" coins, but the ad continued on that there were p-d-d coins. Just one question, how would the seller know that there were all three mints if they were unsearched? lol

As usual there is probably NOTHING fraudulent about these auctions. Misleading maybe, and presented in such a way that the buyers have made a faulty inference as to what is in the lots, but not fraudulent. And remember you can ASK whatever you want for what you are selling. There is no fraud in asking well over market price.

Probability, and possibly knowingly throwing in so S mints into the mix. Now you KNOW all three mints are in there but having no idea where or if there were other S mints besides the ones you added your claim is valid.

If you did no more than confirm that all the cents were wheat backs and didn't bother scrutinizing the dates and mints I would not consider them "searched". Frankly you could have someone who knows nothing about coins simply go through them with the instructions "Make sure every coin has a wheat back reverse" In such a case you would know that they are all wheat cents but they would still be "unsearched".

There's a big time dealer fro CO that sells "original" federally stamped bank rolls. More than a decade ago I purchased a couple of these "original" rolls (I was skeptical but decided to purchase them) and it was obvious after I got them that there was nothing original about them. I left a negative feedback and to this day I can't bid on anything this seller has up for auction. The only things I would consider bidding on are slabbed IHCs.
