I would love to see the faces of old time communist and red guard trading "Ron Bills' instead of their devalued Ruble, 'Do Brown Nuts'

The North Koreans wouldn't hesitate to counterfeit any Reagan bills that are made. Money is money and commies like it too.:kewl:

lol.. deja vu... this topic is being discussed on another forum too!

here's my two cents from what I posted elsewhere:
    Dead leaders for commemoratives only.

With respect to the U.S. I believe that idolatry on U.S. tender is pretentious, pompous, and even dangerous for a democratic republic; Government is supposed to be "of the people, by the people, for the people" -- not a medium to subjectively deify politicians.

Reagan is proffered, yet could we actually imagine a "Carter Quarter", a "Hoover Half", or a "Nixon Nickel?" No - as it should be, and neither should it be for historically-subjective "rock stars" like Reagan, Roosevelt, et al.

I'm all for the return of liberty and symbolism for regular coin and currency issues. Something of beauty and pure artistry like the Educational Series for currency would even be nicer!

Agreed. All of those ex-presidents did good things and bad things. That's a given. For example, Nixon was disgraced by being forced to quit but he also opened communist China to the west and was consulted for foreign relations advice by every subsequent president until his death. The only thing we can debate is how much good and how much bad each one did. That's a debate that will never completely end. The only fair judge on that one is simply time and plenty of it.

A lot of thought , research and public opinion has to go into a decision such as this. Once printed and put out into the public, both domestic and international, there is no going back. I must admit 'Im unfamiliar with the actual govermental process. Can anyone share how and by whom the actual process is made.

Below please find a webpoll that is being conducted by the Washington Post, though it is unscientific, and [probably] reflects the demographic readership of that particular news organization.

(*Note that some folks believe that The Washington Post leans too much in one particular direction.)

    The poll:

"Who deserves the nation's next monetary tribute?"
    http://www.twiigs.com/poll/Politics/50128?results=1

As of 14 March 2010, 14:49 EDT, the results are the following:
    • Pro-Reagan: 30%
    • Pro-Dr. King: 22%
    • Pro-A woman: 12%
    • Pro-A Native American: 9%
    • Pro-Someone else: 25%
Based on the wording of the poll, this implies that 68% (a majority) of respondees are not in favor of Reagan.

That said, however, the poll did not include a choice for "No One", or something to the effect of "Money shouldn't have images of idolatry", or something to the effect of "Return to symbolic images of Liberty etc."

Just my two cents [again] :smile

This is fun, so 89% are against having a generic Natve American, 86% are against having a generic women, 76% are anti-Dr King, and 73% are opposed to having someone other than Reagan, Dr King, A women, or a Native american on curreny. So I guess a majority 73% would prefer either Reagan, Dr. King, A women or a Native American. But how do we determine which one of the four?:goofer:

    I got a total of 99.99%

Also note that anyone who participates in this poll can check 'all that apply' having one or more applicable choices, not sure if that skews things here...

This is the first poll I put on a thread so I'm not sure how well these things work, but if it's anything else like other features of CoinTalk, there's bound to be bugs in it. ;)

    I'll agree

I'm all for replacing Grant's image on the $50 bill with Reagan's! For decades we've seen Grant's mug on the fifty. The same monster that killed many Confederate soldiers, then lived on in currency. This is an offense to anyone who had family members living in the Southern states during the Civil war. Of course Lincoln is featured on the Five dollar bill, but he didn't grab a gun and go out and kill fellow Americans. It's long overdue that we've dumped that demon.

One would have to have been alive for decades to have seen Grant's mug on the fifty, so this is not true for all persons living. Now just because a political leader did not personally use a physical weapon in hand to bring about the demise of an enemy themselves doesn't make much sense to say that they are absolved of contributing to the deaths of enemy combatants... there are plenty of leaders, democratic or other, especially tyrants and dictators, even those featured on coins or currency of their nations, who begot their enemies and even their oppositions demise. History has plenty of examples. The reasoning you put forth simply put in that manner doesn't equate nor justify the means to your end.

What is the exact process to be undertaken to such an important undertaking!! I must have missed that day in Villanova Law School' class of 1981~

I think they should leave the existing portraits as they are. However, with the advent of much higher inflation in the decade ahead, I would propose reintroducing the $500 and $1000 bill into circulation using existing portraits. Also, some consideration should be made for a $200 note to correspond with the 200 Euro note. That would leave a note open for a new portrait, but I don't think Reagan would be my first choice. Polotics all aside, I would like to see Martin Luther King on it.
