I can not find much on this . I believe it is about 50 AD not sure. It is silver. Have no idea of value. Not sure what I am going to do with it. Anyone have any information on this coin.
You might want to request the thread be moved to the ancients section... some one there will be able to tell you very quickly if its authentic or not. From my limited experience with ancients though I am leery, it just doesn't feel right to me...
This looks very wrong. I guess its supposed to represent a coin of Emperor Nero. The portrait looks very fake and the legend calls him NIRO (maybe just fake wear on the E). An original would look like this: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/sear5/s1946.html
@Richard Kennedy , I'm a little confused. You already posted this exact same coin the other day: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/got-this-in-old-coin-bag-is-it-real-54-64-ad.396915/ And then you've asked the same question here, and posted the same coin, in another forum (before I moved it to Ancients). Is there something specific that members of this forum haven't answered? In terms of "how does one tell", a quick list from me would be: - Wrong colour (it just doesn't look right), and it's probably not actually silver (although you could do a specific gravity test to check) - Lettering is incorrect on Nero - Portrait is incorrect on Nero - Reverse design is wrong - Coin is a bit light (but not necessarily damning in itself) And just remember, any of the 5 issues listed above (there are probably more) could indicate a fake. It doesn't take multiple issues to determine a coin is fake, it only takes one - and this coin has multiple. Hope that helps. AC
