1801 Silver Two Reales from the Mexico City Mint A nice and original silver coin struck at the Mexico City Mint with Mo mint mark and a assayers initials of F T for Francisco Arance Cobos and Tomas Butron Miranda. Attractive gray tone with a bit of extra metal (a die chip?) in the U of CAROLUS. There is a slight rim bruise at 9:00 on the reverse, not at all unusual for these bigger coins that saw a lot of circulation. Just a bit bigger than a modern a U.S. silver quarter, this "two bit" coin was legal tender in the U.S. until 1857. The 1801 is listed as KM# 91 in the "Krause/Mishler Standard Catalog of World Coins" (1801-1900). Someday I hope to get one of those nicer examples of the El Cazador shipwreck in the 8 reales denomination.
Nice coin, speaking of that here's mine, got it for $100 on the bay.It has a dark pinta but overall excellent details for being underwater for 100+ years.
I have a 1783 4 Reales coin. Try as I may I could not get the coin to download. Thanks for sharing yours I like it.
Actually this is a half reale. I have one like it from 1789. The one reales have 1R written there instead.
