Here I'd like us to post auctions of coins that are bad for some reason. Obscene prices, crazy shipping, coin way off grade, fake...ect Sound like fun? Well it can't hurt to see... Here goes #1
http://cgi.ebay.com/1936-SCARCE-CLE..._Individual?hash=item1c10d064c6#ht_947wt_1058 Is that really a 66?
Duke, this coin is actually a perfect coin for a discussion all by itself. Based on eye appeal and grading. I mean, I can't see the coin well enough to know if it is graded properly. But eye appeal and ugly toning sure can kill first impression on a coin.
Lousy picture, but the number (1665646-009) checks out. I don't have any auctions to share at the moment...I've spent too much money lately and have had to "pull in my horns" a bit.
snaz I see your point well. Even from those pictures you can tell that it may grade that out by a good TPG but it's just U G L Y and should not get 66 money...Imagine paying the same for that as Leeg pay's for his nice ones. No comparison. And yakpoo it's no hurry I was thinking this could be our auction thread like the other long chain ones...( strap stackers, next level...ect) cause it seems that people find these all the time.
I love the guys who sell the monster toned Morgans... wow! amazing! Then you look at their buyer feedback... and see where they bought the exact same coin in AU two weeks ago. heheh... busted. I'll have to post some links.. should be easy as I saw at least 5 different guys doing this just last night alone.
Well with Ebay it's easy to see what a dealer is doing sometimes. But look at any coin dealer and that is what happens...B and M get's the coin in from a walk-in customer then sells the same coin later for profit. It's just more transparent on Ebay But what we really need are some links BDA
I'm not referring to honest guys buying & reselling.. I am talking about folks buying raw coins, adding tones, and reselling them as toned coins. Here's the most obvious guy doing it... 220568080448 Would post a link, but for some reason my laptop's paste function isn't working. this seller has 4 coins up now... all have fake toning doing in almost the exact same pattern, and if you look at his buyers feedback, you can find the coins before they were "toned".. when he bought 'em as just regular ole AU or less coins. This fella here calls his "estate finds" and says stuff like "this is what happens when you have coins in holders stored in a wet basement"... same deal... buys 'em raw in lower grades, adds some tone to them with chems... and resells them. He's a bit better.. not so obvious in his toning technique.. 300404485421
http://cgi.ebay.com/2010-P-PERFECT-...Individual?hash=item58868d9b6e#ht_3992wt_1165 I bought one of these just to try it out, should have known better. It seems as though this seller broke the slabs open and replaced the supposed "perfect" coins with ones that have many scratches and such. The trick is that you can't tell from the pictures. He must be making a fortune from these.
Unfortunately SEGS has kind of a reputation for putting 70 on its holders....Remember just because they are a grading company doesn't mean you will get an honest grade...
Oh, well now I know. I'm still wondering whether the slabs were opened though, because after my purchase i got a message from ebay to take a survey about any problems with this seller. This hasn't happened with other purchases so I'm thinking someone else must have complained, right?
I suppose that is possible..or just more people unhappy with the SEGS MS70 coins..I have never had that experience with e-bay, but I have not dealt with too many sellers..
Hey guys, be careful The coin refered to by somerandomguy is from SGS, and not SEGS. There is a big difference. This has been argued before, but SEGS is actually a "real" TPG that is respected by some - especially for it attributions of errors and varations.
This auction might not be such a bad deal and the coin looks pretty decent but the seller needs to proofread his description.:goof: http://cgi.ebay.com/SOUTH-AFRICA-1-...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5ad71eadfe
