I picked up this quadrigatus today and look forward to seeing it in person! It's not perfectly centered but I liked that it has nice original skin and probably an old pedigree lurking out there somewhere for it. I'll post better pictures when I get it in hand. Here is my description, if I got the attribution wrong, please correct me: Roman Republic, Anonymous AR Didrachm (Quadrigatus). Rome, circa 225-214 BC. Laureate head of Janus / Jupiter, holding sceptre and brandishing thunderbolt, in quadriga driven to right by Victory; ROMA in relief in linear frame below. Crawford 28/3 & Pl. IV 1-5; Sydenham 64c; RSC 23; RBW 68. 6.88 grams. Extremely Fine; nice cabinet toning with iridescent highlights. NGC CH AU star 5/5, 5/5. Ex. Jonathan K. Kern Collection
Beautiful style on the Janus portrait. It’s my dream to someday own a decent example of a Quadrigatus or the other Roman Didrachm types.
Thanks! I hope you are able to pick one up someday foe your collection! Sometimes they can be reasonable, it just takes a lot of patience.
Gorgeous coin @kazuma78 , CONGRATS! They are among my favorites! I collected these three as they reflected the devaluation of silver in the War with Hannibal as he progressively smashed the Roman Legions...
