Hello all, Why are the TPGS’s so strict regarding the requirement that the Congratulations Sets be sent to them in original mint packaging? The TPGS’s will not assign a “Congratulations Set” designation the 2022-W American Silver Eagle Proof $1 coin that is not submitted to them in the original unopened box sent from the U.S. Mint. Why do think that is? I ordered 3 of them, but I did open the box to remove other coins included with the same order. I hadn’t opened the Congratulations sleeves that the coins come in. Do they have a reason to be this strict? Or, are they just trying to artificially inflate the value of the coins by limiting those that they grade, since the Congratulations Set product (22RF) is limited to 30,000 units, while the ones not in the set (22EA) have no mintage limit? Thanks for your opinion.
Welcome to CT. Have you given any thought to this? The answer is extremely simple. Take a guess before someone actually answers your question. I'll bet you'll get the correct answer for yourself. Aw, you are new here so I'll give you a hint but just this one time: I strike 10 coins and put them in a special set. Then I strike a hundred of the coins and sell them outside the set. See?
Yes, I have 10 2011 Bullion coins from the 2011 Anniversary Set. There are only 2 people that know they are from the Anniversary sets since they are no longer in the sets. You guys know it now but you would have to take my word for it.
I would not pay a premium for them because they are the exact same coins as the unlimited ones you mentioned. They only have a different package.
Thanks for not saying it straight out, like "It's all about the coin, stupid!" Once bitten, twice shy! So is this any different with those "Emergency issues" of West Point Silver Eagles issued without a 'W" mint mark, that have a (W) on their grading label? Should/does anyone pay a premium for those? If I collect W mint marked Eagles, do those count too? I'm thinking, no!
Collectors collect what they like/want. If graded the same by the same TPGS, a Silver Eagle with a "special" label (Congratulations Set) is usually worth more to SOMEONE than one with a generic label. Most dealers treat most of them in each category as melt if they can pull it off when buying. The Mint needs to come up with something really attractive to collectors that can be slabbed with a special label like: 1. One of the first 10 coins struck with die#7850. 2. Limited Edition struck by Jimmy H. on his last day as a pressman. 3. Last graded batch before the "Initial Release Label" expires. and 4...
Here is a checklist for Silver Eagles collectors-checklist-american-silver-eagle-dollars.pdf (libertycoinservice.com)
Thanks for the checklist and for the dialogue. Sure miss the in-person local coin shows and clubs. Not much activity has resumed here in southeast Florida to my knowledge.
That site has checklists for most sets. I live about 50 miles from the nearest coin shop. So, I don't go to them anymore. Good luck with your set.
I believe you are satisfied with the quality answers you have received, so I will just say welcome to CT, keep on sharing, good luck.
Apparently the TPG's, as discussed in this forum, need to confirm that the coins are truly part of the OGP set; simply to be able to charge outrageous prices for the graded coins. Also, TPG's are charging different prices for different labels even though the coin is the same. Unfortunately, there are buyers who are paying for a label rather than the coin. As long as there are buyers for their scams, they will continue to get even more crazy with their ridiculous labels.
TPGs dont sell coins. They couldnt care less if you submit it in the set or not, you wont get the label but the cost to the submitter is the same There's absolutely no scam occurring from the TPGs
The scam is not in the grading, but in the labels. i.e. First releases, Early Releases. First Strike, etc.
Theres no scam in the labels. The PCGS slabs literally say on the back what First Strike means, its not a secret. The Early Releases that NGC does while I wouldnt call it a scam, that one I dislike as that is biting them in the you know what since there are actually some coins that get released early now.
That's interesting. Thanks in advance for educating me. I don't get out much anymore. ICG does not do this. Which of the other three major services does? Is your opinion based on personal experience? Please give us an example.
My bad. What I meant to say was that sellers are charging more or less for the different labels. TPG's are just grading and labeling the slabs.
I had 3 Congrats sets delivered but didn't recognize the box. Opened it... Sent in the three in OGP with shipping receipt along with 3 regular proofs with receipt. Got 6 First Releases back (2-70s and 1-69 of each). Oh well, lesson learned. I marked the Congrats by invoice # just for my benefit.
