Ok, here we go, again. This coin is pretty hot, with 40 bidders. It closes in 4 1/2 days. What do think the final hammer price will be, given the beautiful reverse toning? I will not be bidding on this one, but quite curious.
While we wait for the final results, am I correct that 30-40 years ago a coin like this would sell at a huge DISCOUNT to one without (dis)coloration ? I think it's only in the last 10-15 years that toned coins came into their own, right ?
Toned coins are definitely having their day now. However, they have brought a premium for years. As of recent, that premium has grown considerably.
Yeah I was going to say $800 plus fees. So we're all in the same ball park. 81-Os can be well struck IMHO, and the toning is better than average but not jaw-dropping by any means. And it's on the reverse, to state the obvious. The grade seems reasonable as well, maybe a tad on the generous side. Of course it can always happen that two or three guys get into a bidding war......
I am going to say $979, plus the vig. It is already at $437. Toning is not monster, but I would call it high grade toning. Strike is average for an 1881o, which means fairly weak. Limiting factors for a runaway sale are: 1.toning is on the reverse, and 2. Grade is on the low side for a big price sale. It is only a 63+, and the green bean affirms that, in a recent holder.
She'll always attract a crowd. Four days left means the deep money isn't showing yet. I can see her ringing the bell at $1000 with this many bidders already who can't take their eyes off her.
$900 plus fees is my guess. It's nice but not monster; I'd call it a medium-high (4th rung, below high and monster). Four to five years ago, the current bid would be around what it would sell for but in this hotter market, it has a ways to go before the hammer drops.
I can’t see this one being that strong but I’ll say $1050 because of bidiots I’d call it a $375 coin personal
I’ll go $1250. A fool and their money. I used to be impressed by rainbow Morgan’s a few years back. Now, seems there’s a wide selection of every flavor of the rainbow spectrum making them not so appealing to me anymore. I tend to stick with items that are harder to find with rainbows now.
I agree with @ddddd and @Mainebill that these type of toners used to be $300-400 coins. The market has gone insane, for what is a nicely toned (level 4 out of 6) coin, but not a breathtaking one. Toners over the last 2-3 years have gotten to be irrationally priced. Not buying at this level for what I used to pick up for $200-300, a decade ago.
I’ve been out of touch for a couple years. I can only imagine what a couple of the monsters I have left would bring. I sold most about 217-18 but still have a couple. Including these 2
