It really doesnt make any difference, the simple fact is they sell at a discount to PCGS and NGC. There is no right price for coins they arent a set commodity, they just have prices. Realistically you have to say sells at a discount. CAC sells at a premium, toning sells at a premium, saying sells at a premium means over baseline and ANACS just simply doesn’t set the market at all.
I think I own a single ANACS graded coin, mostly because I liked the coin itself and the price seemed reasonable. Usually, I try to stick with NGC and PCGS, but if a good deal comes in an ANACS slab I'm not opposed to nabbing it. Still, I agree that ANACS doesn't seem to have the selling clout of NGC and PCGS, if selling coins matters in one's case. The higher up the price chain one goes (i.e., $4,000 and above), the less ANACS slabbed coins seem to appear (I may have just not seen them). Were I to buy a coin of that caliber (say, a rare MS64+ $20 St. Gauden's or the like), I would buy it only in an NGC or PCGS slab and preferably with a CAC bean on it. I have seen CACs on ANACS slabs as well, though probably with less frequency than the big 2.
Really more like 1k and up and you could even really argue its more like a couple hundredish and up for non bullion coins
SO, then it's like going to the Grocery store you buy the low grade or off brand food that's not a name brand name then also??.. I do not there is a difference and to me if I had a choice of the same coin different holder I would pick PCGS or NGC before the Walmart ANACS.. I do own several slabs of ANACS.. Thats just me right or wrong.. Cherry Pic
If you can't tell the difference, then you're all good. You can tell the difference in the Comity cheese and Velvetta and many other products. I know what the Quality is because of previous purchases why would I buy it again.
There must be allot new collectors then because this buying slab happens more than one would think. There are three slabs same grade 70 all three companies listed in thread. laid out on a table which one sells last. What you all said is correct but it's not getting through to the masses...
I am having one of those moments where what I am looking for now cannot be found in a PCGS slab, looking for a palladium eagle I have been on “fee bay” and there are a few ANACS coins that fit what I am looking for and there less expensive then there PCGS and NGC counterparts but when your looking to spend 3k plus on a coin you want that strong resale value and I just don’t think you get that with a ANACS graded slab. And another thing do you ever watch those late night coin shows ? they most always in a ANACS graded slab, maybe they think granny won’t notice…LOL
I would have to say that for me, ANACS is totally a legitimate TPG. If memory serves, they were the first. They clearly don't command the sales premiums that PCGS or NGC do, but that is totally market driven which means "us" the buyers and our perceptions. One thing I would suggest you consider is the ultimate purpose of slabbing a coin. First for me its authentication and protection. Second is retail value. Another point, that causes mixed feelings with me, is that when you look up a cert number for ANACS you get confirmation on what it is and where it fits in the population. What you don't get and they don't give you is a value. I'd like a value but at the same time, they aren't making any claim to market value, just what the coin is. The top two show values. So from at least one perspective, one could see this as self serving. The top two are pretty good at marketing themselves and how many coins they've graded, top populations, etc. Still, marketing tools. JMHO. Good luck.
Doesn't...or didn't...the ANA in ANACS stand for American Numismatic Association when they were their official graders, or in some sort of official capacity at one time...? Going strictly by my hazy memory.
ANACS is legitimate, just boring. Their holders are rear end fugly, website is outdated, no chat board, no registry, and it’s IMO like a big sign that reads “nothing to see here move along”. Beyond these image issues, I’ve found their grading accurate and service outstanding.
You think they would try and change there image, to make themselves more main stream and desirable TPG.
Im pretty sure there was one in DC first. They’re actually really kind of the youngest though, they’ve been bought and sold and moved around multiple times with basically 100 percent turnover during the sales. They don’t even guarantee the older slabs like the blue ones or the white ones as those were done by different companies. With the PCGS and NGC sales aside from a few executive changes the companies were essentially kept the same. ANACS is really the oldest in name only
