I cherried, I mean, bought a Half Dime from a member here…

I follow Bradley Trotter on Instagram and get updates whenever he posts new coins up - he posted up a bunch of coins today. Included in his new lot was an 1840-O half dime for $12.



I believe this is my first half dime purchase in nearly a year. A couple minutes after I claimed this lot, a collector responded to my reply saying they would pay me $45 straight up for the coin! This one will go into my personal collection. I’m very sorry to admit this to Bradley… but this is indeed a cherrypick.

Those well acquainted with the Seated half dimes know of two hub types for 1840-O… without drapery and with drapery. The lot did NOT specify which one it was. This one is the with drapery, which is much tougher to find. It is a truly scarce coin in any grade level.

Will post more pictures when I get this one in hand! Very excited about this one.

Fair enough, I didn’t do my due diligence in pricing it, and truth be told I wasn't expecting much interest in a piece with some very pronounced problems. Then again, I’m glad it’ll be going to a good home.

 

Nice Coin. The Half dime has been elusive from my collection forever and so much desired!

 

The 1840 H10C with drapery is a scarce coin in any condition. Nice find!

 

Great snag Flip, it shows that you truly are a collector who knows coins,and what they are doing. As what Eduard stated...in any condition that date and variety comand's top dollar. The specimen I posted I aquired this year...from a dealer friend. He had it priced at $450....gave me a nice break at $350.
It just goes to show if you don't know what your doing...as evident here...
...you shouldn't be selling coins.
I say your catch is at least worth 30-35 times retail the price point you paid.
On a 1 to 10 scale....this is off the chart....and I say best pick of the year! so far....

I cherry picked this seated quarter years ago from a well known member here...lol shortly after John Call asked me not to pick his inventory...lol.... you can ask C-B-D....but John is such a good friend ...I still picked him...but would PM him and say John.....you got this going on....he and I always talked about picking a large show....together just to see how much we could find.

Besides anytime I came sniffing around your inventory you knew something was going on.....

 

An honest mistake was made, one that I intend to stand by, unlike more unscrupulous members of the numismatic community. Besides, there's no need to levy such a veiled statement against my intelligence; I guarantee that I will not make the same mistake again, unlike others who repeatedly fail to learn from experience.

 

I don't know the history of the posters, nor what is being alluded to in the posts besides the cherry picking and, honestly, I don't care. My opinion is that this thread is in poor taste. It's one thing to cherry pick a fellow forum member. It's another thing altogether to create a public thread to brag about it.

 

If it seems that way it wasn’t my intention at all. Assumed Bradley knew what was going on when someone else immediately offered $45… and he said it was fine if I posted pictures, which I was initially kind of reluctant to do. Again all meant to be in good fun… and me and Bradley are cool with each other.

 

All missed information can be corrected. I vividly recall watching one of my 1809 Capped Halves end on eBay about 13-14 years ago. I was expecting $150 and it jumped to $500 in the final seconds. My first reaction was to cheer. Then I slowly said, “Ohhhhh no….” A week later I bought the Overton book for $60. But it paid for itself on its first use at a local coin show. Never looked back since.

 

Not the most I ever paid for a coin… but the most I ever bid was on a lot of four cull Draped Bust large cents on Ebay. One of them was a corroded coin the seller thought was a 1798. Go to the reverse images. Reverse of 95. Look closer. Huge bisecting die crack across the reverse. Anyone familiar with the rare Sheldons knows what’s up. Four figure coin even in that crappy grade. I think my bid might have actually been $179.60 (hint hint, I like to put in bids like that), but it was somewhere around there. Unfortunately lost that auction. Wonder if that seller ever figured it out…

 

Sorry I blew up..... it seemed that Bradley wasn't cool with it but appears he is as he liked your post. I guess I'm getting cynical in my old age.....

Got your half dime in hand @Bradley Trotter. Very happy with it! And if you caught me looking at old images of some of the other half dimes I've had for a while... no ya didn't lol

That "44-O" I got a long time ago was just a damaged 44 plain... but hey I only paid $9 for it!

 

Glad to see it arrived safely and in a timely manner @Omegaraptor. Granted, I feel somewhat embarrassed about making such a significant oversight with regard to variety. However, I would rather a friend benefit from my lapse in judgment than some random coin-flipper on Instagram.

On an unrelated note, the condition of your "44-O" reminds me of the Moon's surface or perhaps the aftermath of a prolonged coastal bombardment.

Besides, I hope you didn't mind some "complimentary" cat hair courtesy of Nibbles.

 

I actually didn’t find any cat hair in the package! Seems like you tried pretty hard to keep it out.

When I get back home in June I’m probably going to make an album on here of all my half dimes, and several other albums as well.

 

Yeah we learn from mistakes. I’ve been cherrypicked before and done it too. Little bit of advice o mint half dimes and dimes from the pre 1853 period very scarce and very underrated. Especially without major problems and original skin. Even in lower grades. These coins got used hard. And melted when silver went up
