Decent coin book for kids

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by TopcatCoin, Mar 12, 2010.

  1. Yesterday, my 7-year-old son (and roll-searching assistant) brought home a book from the school library entitled, "Cool Coins: Creating Fun and Fascinating Collections!" by Pam Scheunemann." I have to say that I was touched as he can pick out any two books each week, and they are usually about sports or science. The book is great. It has chapters on the history of coinage and how coins are made, how to get started collecting, how to store your collection, etc. There is even a section on grading coins and how to handle them. All of this and more is written for the 8-12 year old with nice colored pictures as well. He enjoyed reading it to me last night but not as much as I enjoyed the time together. I would recommend it to those with kids and nieces, nephews, grandkids, etc.

BTW: When he showed me the book he said: "Don't worry Dad, I did not tell the librarian or anyone else that we collect coins." That's my boy! :smile

That's a great find. I don't think I've ever seen a book targeted to youngsters. Found it at amazon.........http://www.amazon.com/Cool-Coins-Cr...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1268421923&sr=1-1

And don't forget to use the link in this thread to benefit CoinTalk

On a similar note, while it's not a book, here's a fun little site designed to teach kids about Roman coins.

That is a really cool site, Gao. My daughter's gonna love it.

What got my nine year old hooked was her school library had a sale and she bought me a book from the 1960s, put out by the Boy Scouts. She ended up reading it. The book tells the history and what you need to collect to get your merit badge. Now Kristy's working on her own merit badge.

Hi, does the American Numismatics Society offer something simular to the link below, that is offered at the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association?

I have only heard positive things about this training material for kids.

Thanks TC for the link to the book. Since my son and I are starting collecting together, I am definately going to get it for him so he can read it to me and maybe we will both learn something

Not sure about ANS but the ANA offers many opportunities for young numismatists and their teachers. http://www.money.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Teacher_Tools
