The smaller the coins the more important the nicks. I can 65 it off these pics. A 66 wouldn't surprise me.
Nope, MS is Mint State, which means uncirculated...uncirculated means no signs of wear. If a coin comes from the mint and goes into a cash register and from there to you, is that circulated...maybe so, but how would you ever prove it? One of the continuing discussions here is how some AU (Almost Uncirculated) coins can be MUCH nicer than MS60 or even MS62 coins.
Its just ironic at times with those who think they found gold...and its iron pyrite fools gold.... I cannot count how many times I've had to break the news nada! What does hurt...is when some tries to sell a set of Jeffersons,Roosevelt's, Franklins.....and they have nice sets..but are unaware of market.... and you tell them a price and they are like in shock..or catch an attitude.... I understand but its like this famous line"You Can't Handle The Truth" lol.
You know Kentucky ....your quote about was what it was in the 60's uncirculated meant just that...if it went into a register it was circulated. You wanted an unc. Roll you went to the bank...and purchased it...even though the coins in said register Were just broken open.
“Uncirculated” is an unfortunate term. If a piece has no wear and no environmental damage, it’s Mint State. If you want to split hairs and say that it isn’t, because it was once in a cash register, knock yourself out.
The words are interchangeable. That's unfortunate but it will not be changed. Mint State should be used. I've been trying to remember that myself with some success.
If any rolled coins are sent to a bank from a vault that is considered circulation because to process etc the machines to roll and people touch them etc. If something sent directly from the mint for purchase that should be mint condition but does not mean others in circulation cannot look in mint condition. If the mint were perfect there would not be errors! Just saying! Working at a bank for 20 plus years, many collectors came in, ones etc. A man would ask for $20,000 in ones and bring back the next day. Be surprised what he found. Mis prints, coloring etc. Anyway, when it comes to coins mint condition will always be used as the term. Always has but as Eddie said as long as it looks good, who cares!
I collect Lincoln's and zincoln's. Doesn't make me any type of expert, but I've seen so many examples that the cent in question doesn't even seem to be MS. Wear on the bowtie is a giveaway. The bowtie (in my opinion) seems to show wear first before any other feature, perhaps because it is one of the first points that wear will show. Technically, any coin that has been in circulation cannot be MS. Coin rolls could contain MS coins, but that seems really iffy unless they are with other MS coins. And any coin received in change has definitely seen circulation and some type of wear. Have to go with AU, not MS for said coin. Again, just my opinion.
You all need to understand the terminology of the hobby between the. 1950's,60's vs the 1970's on..... older collectors use, Unc. BU. AU. More so than any other description. I know collectors who will refer as a 4 or 5 or will say its not worth 5 money. Also it depends or demographics, regional location....example here we put you purchases in a bag....in the south or mid west in a sack......here its a soda or coke....south its a pop. It wasn't until slabed coins came to play were grading was a number 1 to 70.....so older collectors use different terms. One reason the powers being came up with a standard grading system of points,was to defined each grade.
I'm in agreement with most. Not a 67. To my eye, 63-64. On a really good day with the right grader it might get a 65 but would require some stars to align. Good luck.
Think of it this way: it can be in uncirculated and/or Mint State condition...key words "condition" and "state"...and not be literally uncirculated and/or directly from the mint. Over the years, I've sent several coins from non-bank/mint rolls and even a couple from my pocket for grading and received straight MS grades. I wouldn't advise it very often and/or without experience, but it's possible...if likely not in 67.

Not even sure I know what a 4 or 5 is. In SE Kentucky we put our store purchases in a poke (remember a pig in a poke?)
