Good Morning and Happy Week to All. Here is a very nice IMHO shilling I got at DNW some years ago. As you may know a very rare date in higher grades; GTG if you like: PS - Sorry about some of the pixel issues
This got a "62" at NGC and I was flabbergasted. There are NOT the hairlines present in any lighting conditions, it has not been cleaned or altered. The coin has to be a very early strike and some of the foremost of English dealers have seen the coin (with some crazy offers for it) who agree. This was a DNW auction coin about 6 years ago and was viewed and lauded by many. Anyway, it is one of my favorite Vicky shillings and is a quite rare date.
I think with coins like this, and getting such a grade, that it discourages possible submitters as the TPGs can be patently off base (if that makes sense).
Well, what I can say is that in hand the piece is really incredible and possibly one of my favorite shillings - like it better even than very highly graded 1848/6, 1850 and 1854. The coin is extremely proof-like, not polished and at least under every light source I have tried lacking hairlines post minting. BTW, the missing bits are not post mint damage but rather filled dies. Some quite knowledgeable Brits that I won't reveal have looked at this coin and give it similar marks. The grade? MS 62! I would buy any Vick shilling of same quality of any date as a 62.
