"Conserving" vs. "Cleaning" - Do I Have It Right?

    Well stated! I take the stance that if you IN ANY WAY do something to alter a coin it is CLEANED.

    I would put it just a little differently: if it comes back from the TPG "details", it was cleaned; if it comes back with a straight grade, it was conserved.

    Still disagree. If it's damaged before you get your hands on it, it's going to come back details no matter what you do to it (unless you're a successful doctor).

    Bad cleaning or failed conservation can turn a non-details coin into a details coin. But if you send in your coin and it gets details, it doesn't necessarily mean you goofed (except by submitting it).

    Any type of conservation is cleaning, once you know how to recognize it. You either except it or you don't.
