In Pierre Bastien's "Coins with a double effigy issued by Licinius, at Nicomedia, Cyzicus and Antioch" (1973) he refers, without reference, to a Lebanese hoard of ~7000 nummi that had been studied by Strauss & Kellner. Does anyone know if this study was published, or have any more information about this hoard? Google seems to be coming up blank.
Nothing at https://coinage.princeton.edu/resources/bibliography/ No hoards of nummi that size in FLAME.
Just an idea: Pierre Strauss "worked" with MuM AG in Basel. I suppose that in the 70ies to "study" a hoard of 7000 nummi for a coin dealer meant picking out the most valuable and numismatic important coins
Did Bastien write the hoard had been studied or was being studied by Strauss and Kellner? Obviously this hoard of 7000 nummi has not been published, and it is not mentioned by the Coin Hoards of the Roman Empire Project. My guess : more than 7000 coins is a time-consuming work. The Lebanese civil war started in 1975 and it is likely that this hoard was looted before Strauss and Kellner could complete their study.
He said studied (past tense), and Bastien's article was published in NC 1973, so it must predate that. This is all he had to say: It's a shame if there was nothing published. I'm curious why they dated the hoard to 317-318 ignoring these nominally later coins.
In another paper, "Folles sans marque émis par Constantin en Italie", Schweizer Münzblätter, Band 24 (1974) heft 93, p. 5-8, Pierre Bastien wrote : Footnote 11 says: "un trésor du Liban étudié actuellement par P. Strauss et W. Kellner". In French it means that, while he writes his article, the Lebanese hoard is still being studied.
