I have several old tickets that came with ex-BCD coins. All of them give his full name. His name is also public on the Internet, because, if I recall correctly, it comes up on Google, including in several old posts on the Forvm discussion boards. But I no longer mention it here after having been chastised as a "gossip" when I did so a long time ago, having no idea that the name was supposedly secret. In effect, it's an open secret.

Oh yeah, I remember reading that thread and wishing it had gone very differently! Especially given the open secretness of it, it certainly doesn't merit chastising anyone, and I doubt the collector would want that. I usually think of it mainly as a convention for describing the collection, and stick to it.

To really research the coins, though, a lot of times I feel like it does make a difference who exactly a collector was. Especially if they've also written on the topic or had important relationships that shaped their own collection (its content and/or interpretation) or the collections of others, and reference publications. It also makes a difference any time you're talking about coins for which there are very few examples and you want to keep track of which is which.

E.g., I'm forgetting the details, but Mildenberg's Coinage of the Bar Kokhba War included many coins from collections described as "Private Collection 1," "Collection 2" (I don't remember if there was 3...; Abraham Bromberg was #2). it could be very confusing to keep track of the specimens if you couldn't match up which was which. I often find with Roman Provincial Coins (where rarity is quite common) that I'm left wondering if the multiple private examples cited in older literature are all, in fact, the same coin.

Wow just wow. The US Type Set is stunningly amazing and the King of Siam set is truly mind blowing.

    He's going into politics:

From the San Francisco Chronicle (sfgate.com):

WASHINGTON - This tech billionaire wants to take on Tesla - on the way to the United States Senate.

Dan O'Dowd, founder and chief executive officer of Green Hills Software, which builds operating services and programming tools for computer systems, announced his bid for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday.

O'Dowd simultaneously launched a multimillion-dollar national advertising campaign against Tesla's Full Self-Driving technology. The television advertisement, "Unsafe at Any Speed," includes videos of Tesla's self-driving car malfunctioning.

O'Dowd challenges incumbent Sen. Alex Padilla, California's former secretary of state, who was tapped by Gov. Gavin Newsom to fill Vice President Kamala Harris' seat when she became vice president.

Q: What do you do after you've collected All The Coins?

A: Start collecting political offices. You've obviously got the cash.

Really cool, and what great coins.
Hope Mr. O’Dowd is a cointalk lurker.

You can never collect all the coins you want.....not enough $$$$. Not even Vladimir Putin with his Trillion could have a complete German States collection:D

This is the thing... if any of us had the $$$ we could just pop on VCoins and add the best examples of every variety available into our basket in an afternoon. Sure we'd be behind those that have the patience to wait for their advisor to select our next "fine style" purchase at auction .. but we'd be miles ahead of 90% of the collectors here.

Not my cup of tea (not that I have a choice!). But I enjoy the hunt and using my extremely limited resources to find coins I find interesting or important. However I gotta say that I love when great coins outside of my financial reach are posted here.
    Inspiring!

Severus Alexander find me at NumisForums

Seems to be loading better now. I think the coin that most impressed me was the Flamininus portrait stater.

Now, I freely admit I probably have a thing against billionaires (especially ones who make their money from selling drone software etc. to the military), but this struck me as icky and tasteless:

Really? That's the feature he picked to sum up the collection? :meh: (This is the site banner, and it appears on the covers of all the brochures he's selling too.)

Not only that, but it contains a spelling mistake: a missing apostrophe.

Also I would expect a billionaire to have a very extensive record of philanthropy. I can find nothing in this vein about Dan O'Dowd... I hope I'm wrong and would be overjoyed to be corrected. But given how self-aggrandizing his websites are, I'm doubtful that the absence of a philanthropic public record is due to him keeping that kind of thing private.

    So overall? Not impressed.

I've had a careful look at the Islamic coins in the Tyrants of Tigris & Euphrates section. Some are great rarities, others relatively common coins, one coin for each ruler of Mesopotamia from the earliest times through Saddam Hussein. In that sense, the Tyrant is a true 'collector', not just an accumulator of trophies. I can appreciate his vision.

I had the same reaction. But then I thought «ok, but coin collectors are a strange breed anyway».
Perhaps the technology Mr. O’Dowd is developing will lead to our ultimate destruction, and perhaps it will save us from the next tyrant. Who knows. In any event, bragging about price always makes you look like the douchebag in an 80s B-movie.

Like Lucy, who was unimpressed by Beethoven because he doesn't appear on bubblegum cards, I was underwhelmed by the Tyrant Collection's selection of Faustina coins.

I firmly believe if paddyman98 keeps digging up the earth he will find a gold mine or oil will blow him out of the ground. Maybe just maybe panzerman will have the last laugh. Let's hope they both hit the jackpot. Enjoyed the post thanks and good luck.
