I have a well, well-worn 1916 Mercury dime, and there is little or no way to find the mint mark, if there actually is one. My lcs was of no help. The guy at the ANA Museum told me of die rotation, but he didn't know if it exists on P or S mints as well. What are some things to look for?
This is the Average mint mark position for a 1916 D dime.Even in the lowest grade if this specific spot is still visible. With no signs of a D or S then most definitely not either, just a no mm Philly.
It’s funny you asked this. I buy bags of junk silver from a fellow that repo’s storage buildings. One bag I bought from him not long ago had a very worn 1916-(?) dime. I posted it here and we all had fun guessing at the blob that was once a mintmark. Like you, I finally thought that perhaps PCGS could identify a marker and spent the cash to send it in…. We’ll, they returned it not holdered. Said it was not identifiable….. So I am guessing if PCGS cannot identify a 1916-D using die markers or whatever method they may have available, then it was a lost cause…. I finally left the dime with my buddy that owns an LCS and told him to give the dime to a youngster putting a Merc set together and tell him that just maybe…….
In that condition I think that the only identifying markers could be a major IDB, a die crack or maybe a cud. The only other thing available is date position and MM position.
