I don't think the smithsonian has one. From what I recall, if the 64 Peace dollars exits, they are illegal to own. Just like '33 $20 (except that special one, but we don't talk about that one...).
The govt ruled that the seizure of 10 of them from a collector was improper. LINK-- http://www.coinlink.com/News/us-coi...improperly-seized-1933-st-gaudens-gold-coins/
I'm sure stuff happens at the mint that none of us will ever hear about. I will check out those two books though, good tip! With all the security nowadays, it would definitely be intimidating to work at the US mint, that's for sure. It may be best that we know very little about what goes on at the mint but I wonder if arrests and/or incident reports are public record there? I wonder if there will ever be another error as big as the 3-leg buffalo nickel? I find it interesting that few ppl are known who work at the US mint. Here we are, thousands of coin collectors and none of us know anyone who works there. Either that or we've been sworn to secrecy, or for whatever reason it's hush, hush. Oh well, I will keep my ears and eyes open cause I for one wish that more errors were released. Hey you never know, maybe a US mint worker will read this and let a few more error coins slip thru the system just to reward us. Yeah, wouldn't that be something? Hey, a guy can dream.
Actually, the government (executive branch) seized the coins. The courts (judicial branch) haven't yet ruled on ownership.
I honestly cannot believe they are still making such a big deal about this stuff. With all the challenges facing this country, you'd think they would have better things to do with the court system!
I imagine many, many coins collectors and dealers say that same thing. However, I strongly suspect after working there for several years it would become a situation like any job. Do CAB drivers like to go our for a drive for fun? Do truck drivers want to go for a drive for fun? I've noticed over the years that not many fat people work in food places. You would think if you worked in a place that made coodies you would end up weighing 500 pounds. No I suspect if you worked in a place like the US Mint you would go home hating coins. Maybe not, but I think I would.
Re: the 5 1913 V nickels I think you have those confused with the original 1804 dollars. The 1913 V nickels were completely unauthorized. In fact the mint was under orders to do nothing about the 1913 nickels until the Buffalo design had been approved. Of course those orders didn't come until after the V nickel dies had been made (Some for Philadelphia, and ten sets of dies shipped to San Francisco.) But no authorized strikes were ever produced. Some people have suggested they were pieces struck to test the dies, but you don't test production dies. Die tests are made from new designs dies or altered design dies. Once the final design is selected and production dies are made they either work or they don't.
Let's try this again.... Thank you condor, you are of course correct. Somehow my syanpse' filed the info in the wrong directory or something. I should have referred to Samuel Brown and his highly persuasive advertising. Maybe he was ahead of his time in the ad game.
Little green men captured at Roswell.... made to mint U.S. coins mmmmmmmmmmmmmm now there's the answer to the mules, errors , etc...etc..etc.... would'nt be the Jack and the six pk of Bud...Huh? I have known people who see such things after a few Jack's washed down with a 6 of Bud. And for a fact the SBA dollar was not from this planet.....unless they landed durring the filming of the Wizzard of Oz ! And seen the wicked witch of the west!
