And the big reveal.... NGC MS 63 STAR PCGS MS 63 ....I was thinking it had a chance of being a 63+ or 64 but PCGS didn't add a color bump....I don't like giving up stars but the market value is higher in the PCGS holder along with the TrueView photo (even if I don't personally agree with that, I know the general market does)....regardless this coin is a keeper for the foreseeable future NGC slab photo is below; I'm not showing the PCGS photo so that you all can't figure out the other grades by running through the cert numbers (plus I didn't take a new slab photo yet)
Part 2 is posted here: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/pcgs-sub-2022-guess-the-grade-part-2-of-5.395513/
I really didn't think that both of them would go so conservative. I can't argue with the grade. It's a pretty coin.
To some yes (and I like stars quite a bit) but generally speaking, the toner market will price a colorful toner in a PCGS holder higher than one in the same grade with a star at NGC.
Yeah, I'm wondering if we can change our guesses, or if this is like school where you can get in trouble if you do that...
Absolutely! I could not believe that PCGS did not go at least 64, to match the NGC star. Makes no sense.
If you are looking to maximize the future (resale) value, then it makes sense to send it to PCGS. One thing to consider is how much risk you are willing to take. I think your coin is a lock 65 (many of us thought it could even be nicer) but you never know how conservative a TPG will be on the next grading. The coin is worth more as an NGC 65 star than a PCGS 64. A crossover sub eliminates your risk but it does add a bias. I'd probably risk the crackout option if sending to PCGS. But I've been known to be wrong before, so don't just listen to my opinion (make your own call based on the pros and cons as you see them). Also, if it were to get a gold cac, then I wouldn't dare crack it.
