I always hate it when I'm just trying to run up the bid and win...

But these liberty seated halves won't take up too much space. And I got them decently under price guide. At xf40 I couldn't believe they didn't bring more.

I got them both around 170 each. I place a 200 bid on each and went to sleep. Price guide is 225 on each. I like these 2 pcgs style holders.

I'm getting ready to move soon. So I splurged one last purchase. I have to sit tight a bit and stock pile some cash to replace the move money.

Greysheet says those coins in XF-40:
    1858-O -- $125
    1856-O -- $110

At auction I shoot for 20% over Greysheet, more if I REALLY want them.
    Greysheet plus 20%:
    1858-O -- $150
    1856-O -- $132

Why would you just run up the bid if you didn't want to win?

Nice coins but a bit under value on the winning bid. If it's what you want that's all that counts. Thanks for sharing.

Not going to let some stuff go too cheaply. A lot of these coins as of late have been bringing over pcgs price guide value on the auctions. I figured these would end around 250. I think a BIN for that and they would both sell fairly quick. I felt like they needed to hit 200. Sometimes if you bid high early on these coins go for more. Because someone comes along and starts incrementally running up your bid and when people see it going higher it can create a bidding war early on. Didn't work on these. But I don't mind paying what I paid. I know I could unload them for more.

Play and simple, it makes no sense to me why anyone would bid on something they don’t want. I understand people bidding to raise the price for something they own but I would just put a reserve price on it.

@Vertigo if you wanted those coins I can understand the bids. If you didn't honestly want them why would you care in the least what they hammered for, unless of course you are the seller? I don't follow the logic.

I don’t really understand it either. Kind sounds like a low thing to do.

I used to buy classic cars at auction. I hated it when people jacked up the price until they thought I had reached my breaking point and then would drop out. I turned the tables on one guy by dropping out and leaving him the winner @ $1000.00 for a 1976 M-B 280C Coupe that needed repairs. The guy started stammering about how he didn't really want the car so I lit into him about " Why are you bidding then? ".
I then asked the auctioneer to start the bid over and ban that guy from bidding.
He did and I got the car for $250.00 + TTL. That guy never bid against me again, and after I repaired the car, I drove it for years, in fact, I let my daughter and her new husband drive it to San Antonio on their honeymoon, and then again on their second honeymoon.

It didn't matter if I win or not. They are nice and I like them both. I collect half dollars. I like the older holders. I spend my days running bids up. It's fun. It is good for the sellers. I will send both these coins to CAC as I believe both will receive a green bean. I can sell for more than I paid. And that's my fun in collecting. I only own one coin I paid on retail for. As far as greysheet pricing versus pcgs, recently pcgs price guide have surpassed greysheet on some issues. These bids were already at 150s when I jumped on them. I only wished to push them to 200.

That sounds like a sad, lonely existence. May your future be more fulfilling than your past.

Sometimes I've run up bids a bit here and there because I saw lonely coins that just needed caring for. Plus I think it makes sellers happy to see activity on their auctions and I like seeing people happy.
