Hey fellas, I got this 22 no D from my grandfather and I’m wondering if this is an altered coin, strong reverse or weak reverse, wether it would straight grade, and what the value would be. Thanks
I have been looking for a good reference so you can check for styles and die markers. @Rick Stachowski do you have the reference on Coppercoins? This looks like a strong reverse, but doesn't follow the correct wear pattern. And the second 2 just doesn't look right.
It may be one of the varieties but I don't believe this is the strong rev. variety. The specimens that feature the “Strong Reverse” variety have a weak first “2” in the date and yours seems to be stronger than the second. Without researching I believe there are 2 no d varieties and 2 weak d. Your pics aren't sharp enough to tell. Here are pics of my "Strong Reverse". It probably would grade 35 possibly 40 by the reverse. The obverse is tough to grade as most of the detail was polished out of the die. The link in Ricks post will give you everything you need.
Here is an old thread on my 22D no D. 22D no D | Coin Talk I am not sure this photo of the coin is in the thread.
As stated, it's a weak D. It's from your grandfather therefore it is definitely a keeper, right! Thanks for sharing.
The one above would also not qualify as the canonical no-D. To get that designation, it must have a strong reverse. The no-D/weak reverse has some premium, but not a lot.
Yeah I know mine is not too strong reverse . One day I'll have to get it checked out for the coat tail variety .
