The larger: I purchased a Harem gold piece/metal today. Other notes on the cardboard folder include: Turkey Mahmud II - 1223 AD (11 yr., 2.9 tw - grams?) ($300)

It has a small repaired hole in it as if it had been worn as jewelry. (The hole appears more as dent).
    --
The smaller: I also picked up another gold coin from Turkey. The notes on the card board holder included: AH1223, Turkey, 1/2 Cedid Mahmudiye, Gold.
    Similar to KM644. (65.00)
    ---
I have included the prices in case anyone was interested. Sorry, I am not set up to post photos. Both are visually appealing to me. I have always wanted some Turkish gold. Now I have some.:)

Does any one else collect Turkish gold pieces?

Congratulations! I envy your coins. I don't collect Turkish coins, so unfortunately I can't be much help, but a couple of questions. You say that the two coins are similar, but the other one is labeled 1223 AH, so I am guessing that the 1223 AD here is a typo? If they are Ottoman coins they should be from the reign of Mahmud II--AH 1223-1255 (AD 1808-1839). http://www.osmanliparalari.com/30-2mahmut-1223/30-2mahmut-rumi.htm

If you click on the little photo icons on that page, it has pictures. Do they look like any of these?

Zuhara: You did good. The two pieces I picked up are actually very different from each other. Yet, they do resemble your website pics enough that I can easily image that they are close relatives. Calipers would be helpful.

About the new one: The smaller one is a coin for sure. The notes on the coin holder indicate: AH1223, Turkey, 1/2 Cedid Mahmudiye, gold, similar to KM644 (catalog abbrev).

The larger one appears more like a medal to me than a coin. It is very ornate. However, after looking at the website you directed me to, I am starting to wonder if it is indeed a coin afterall.

Regarding the website, I found enough similarity to feel comfortable that I am getting closer. There were major differences. Anyways, it appears I did do very well with price, not that I was questioning that a whole lot. I have been doing other business with this shop owner, and have found him to be an honest gentlemen. I never ask for a lesser price, as I know he will offer if he is able to.

This coin collector/dealer I purchased from is retired Military. He has been collecting all his life. He lived in Turkey for at least a year. I could tell he had many coin stories to share, but he had too many customers in the shop and his wife was on him to get the shop closed (A few of us were still there almost 45 min. after closing). Many of the coins he now has for sale came from his private collection.

Oddly, regarding the larger one, I was having some regrets. I had to leave an old Civil War era 5 dollar Liberty behind. I could not muster the funds for both coins. After consulting with Max (the shop owner/collector), he agreed that the Harem gold would be harder to come by again from my current location in Kansas. :mouth:

Thank you again for your hard work. I sure appreciate the help. Right now, the thought of having Harem gold is sort of humorous to me. And regardless of its exact description, it is a beautiful piece art wise.

    Thanks.

No. The small one shows AH1223, 1/2 Cedid Mahmudiye from Turkey.

The "Harem" piece indicated 1223 AD - 11 yr. Perhaps the shop owner had a typo of sorts when writing on the cardboard holders.

He pulled out a few special pieces, so I am sort of uncertain which information now belongs to which coin. I will check with him about the date more during my next visit.

no rolls to search so researched for you instead

I hope this earns me some extra credit (my karma has been low lately):D

For your large harem piece I searched for every gold coin that had the 1233//11 designation and this is what I came up with:

(the valuations are way out of date)

    GOLD ZERI MAHBUB ISSUES
Zeri Mahbub - Beloved Gold Series
The obverse of all denominations consists of a toughra,
with mintname and date below on the 1 and 1/2 Zeri Mahbub
only. The reverse of the 1 and 1/2 bears a four-line
inscription; the reverse of the 1/4, the mint and date.
    FIRST TYPE:
Lily on 1 and 1/2 Zeri Mahbub, branch with one rose on
    the 1/4 Zeri Mahbub.
    SECOND TYPE:
Rose replaces lily on 1 and 1/2 Zeri Mahbub, branch
with 2 roses replaces branch with one rose on the 1/4 Zeri
    Mahbub.

    KM# 608 1/4 ZERI MAHBUB
Gold Note: Second type; Weight varies: 0.75-0.79 grams.
    AH1223//11 — 16.50 20.00 35.00 50.00 —

    KM# 610 ZERI MAHBUB
Gold Note: Second type; Weight varies: 2.30-2.40 grams.
    AH1223//11 — 50.00 75.00 85.00 125 —

    GOLD RUMI ISSUE
Characterized by a flower right of toughra and an ornamental
border, consisting of a wavy line hexagon, on both
    sides.

    KM# 612 1/2 RUMI ALTIN
    1.2000 g., Gold
    AH1223//11 — 75.00 100 125 175 —

    KM# 614 2 RUMI ALTIN
Gold Note: Weight varies: 4.70-4.80 grams.
    AH1223//11 — 100 120 140 200 —

    NEW GOLD RUMI ISSUES
Similar to the Rumi series, except the wavy borders are
replaced by an inscription containing the name and titles of
    Mahmud II

    KM# 616 RUMI ALTIN
    2.4000 g., Gold, 23 mm.
    AH1223//11 — 50.00 60.00 90.00 125 —

    KM# 617 2 RUMI ALTIN
Gold Note: Weight varies: 4.70-4.80 grams.
    AH1223//11 — 110 130 160 200 —

For your smaller piece this is what I could find:

    GOLD CEDID MAHMUDIYE ISSUES
This type is similar to the Hayriye, but with ovals of inscriptions and branches replaced by a wreath design.
    KM# 644 1/2 CEDID MAHMUDIYE
Gold Note: Weight varies: 0.70-0.80 grams.

    GOLD HAYRIYE ISSUES
This type is similar to the New Adli series, but in place of
the legend around the edge, there are alternating ovals of
    inscription and branches.
    KM# 637 1/2 HAYRIYE ALTIN
    0.8600 g., Gold

    NEW GOLD ADLI ISSUES
The toughra appears on the obverse, with the mint name
and date on the reverse, additional legends around and the
mint name Qustantinyah has epithet Al-Mahrusa added.
    KM# 634 1/2 NEW ADLI ALTIN
    0.7800 g., Gold

    Cheers !

Yes indeed, - extra credits you. Thank you so much.

I located a dictionary for various scripts of the old nations, but needed to spend more time, and document my search better. I tend to review the same stuff - it is hard to keep organized with something like this.

I will retrieve my coins soon and go through your list.

At first glance for the larger one: The ones titled "New Gold Rumi Issues" seemed to fit best. (A long time ago, I took up learning to write and speak Arabic - I did not progress to being fluent. I have since lost any real ability to converse in conversational Arabic).

So the large one sort of fits here: (Lily yes, but did not recognize a rose). Also, this one appears extra clean for an old relic.
    NEW GOLD RUMI ISSUES
Similar to the Rumi series, except the wavy borders are
replaced by an inscription containing the name and titles of
    Mahmud II.
    ----BUT---
GOLD HAYRIYE ISSUES (your note for the small one caught my attention because of the "ovals and branches."
    ----
As for the small one: The reverse appears to have 4 roses around an ornate one line inscription. The obverse appears to have up to a four line inscription, with a date at the bottom with a floral image directily below. The wreathe/floral vine around the center is very pretty. Overall, this smaller coin is dirty.

From you notes, the most similar for the small one might be:
    GOLD CEDID MAHMUDIYE ISSUES
This type is similar to the Hayriye, but with ovals of inscriptions and branches replaced by a wreath design.
    KM# 644 1/2 CEDID MAHMUDIYE
Gold Note: Weight varies: 0.70-0.80 grams.
    ----
    Thank you again.
