Two images are posted of the same $2 1/2 Liberty. The top image shows a long thin scratch running down the Liberty's face. It is hidden in the bottom photo because the position of the light has been changed in relation to the coin.

Request. Please, please only vote without leaving any comments so that everyone has a chance to think this out for themselves first. We'll discuss the answer tonight. Additionally, since this topic is covered in Coin Grading Nursery School, it would be very helpful :angelic: if all the :bookworm::cigar: high school & college level numismatic graduates don't post until later today so others get to work it out for themselves and don't just vote with the majority.

Brain Teaser Question: Looking at the obverse of the coin straight on, in what position must the light come from to best see the hairline scratch down the face? Disregard other marks on the coin for your answer.

The Light should be placed in a dark area. I think....

Without revealing my position choice, I think the light angle to the surface matters as well.

The answer is: however it was done in the first picture showing the hairline scratch quite well!

I disagree. A flee or roach can keep things interesting for a cat or dog and what is interesting for lower forms of life such as a worm may just be amusing, boring, or go unnoticed by organisms with a higher intellect.

A true contrarian is a person who opposes or rejects popular opinion. In order to do that with any validity in an interesting way, the contrarian must have an acceptable degree of knowledge about the subject he has a contrary opinion about. Even the best humor is based on a degree of knowledge about the subject.

To keep this related to generalities and coins I'll use this example: A strictly CRH collector has no business commenting in a discussion on the availability of an XF-40 Miller-32.3 Connecticut Copper UNLESS they wish to appear a fool, troll, or no-life, lonely, wannabe. Anonymous chat forms encourage their need for attention for them and their ilk. I can speak with authority on this subject as a long time ago I was a no-life, juvenile, loser, wannabe, know-nothing, friendless, rejected little nerd crying out to be noticed.

    Now, I just use :android::angelic::arghh::artist::astronaut::banhappy::banghead::beaver::blackalien::bookworm::bored::borg::bucktooth::cat::cat:...

So far, this is turning out to be EXACTLY how I wished it would go. I'm encouraged to do more of these.

Let's open the thread up for every one to vote now. Please no comments yet. Can we do it :muted: for another hour or two? :nailbiting: but

Couldn't you change the position of the coin in relation to the light and get the same results?

Thanks. I voted but really have no idea. Anxious to learn the answer so I can check some of my coins.

I went with 9 o'clock so there might be a casted shadow of the scratches.

Why don't you answer that for us when all the polling is done.

So you chose the field of numismatics to break this cycle? :joyful:

No, I became a Mime at a traveling carnival. I was noticed and asked to work for a Major Cruise Line, quit on the spot when I fell in love with Hawaii. I got interested in coins, took a seminar rand finally got my big break taking a job as a clerk at the ANACS in DC. By then I had lost most of my shy nature as I had turned into an abrasive know-it-all.

    Now for more questions/discussion:

    1. If the light was overhead how could the scratch look shiny in one image and disappear in the other so that is incorrect.

    2. Who can tell why 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock is incorrect?

    3. Which is the
    best answer and why?

    A. 3 o'clock

    or
    B. 9 o'clock
