A congressman has proposed a US commemorative coin program to honor dogs in 2023.

    From Coin World:

Dogs could receive 2023 commemorative coin program
    Published: Oct 6, 2021, 11 AM

Legislation was introduced for a three-coin commemorative program for 2023 recognizing working dogs in the military and their continued service after retirement from active duty.

The legislation, H.R. 5232, was introduced Sept. 10 in the House by Rep. Patrick T. McHenry and referred to the Committee on Financial Services for further consideration.

Actually those service dogs are noble beasts and deserve recognition, but a coin? Really?

They deserve it more than basketball or baseball, I'd say. Commemorating sports, yeesh.

Now, produce an Ultimate or Freestyle commemorative, with the rim upset on only one side, and we can talk.

Although I would not buy one, as I don't buy any Mint products anymore, I certainly support this effort as long as the proceeds go to a really good organization that actually will support these noble creatures. But it will be a tough call as to what or which dogs to portray. The military isn't just using Sheppard's anymore. Neither are the police.

Much of his posting history is gone. He had a lot more posts about "dogs on coins" than I can find now. I also have a vague impression of him oversharing a little bit about furry stuff.

This is about all you get out of DC, commemorative coins and names for new post offices. Don't ask them to spend time doing anything meaningful.
