Snaz, I don't think the OP meant any disrespect. I only think he was pointing out the irony of living so close to the Mexican border and recieving "Canadian" in his change.....

I'm not sure how to reply to this post which in my opinion is written in a way to close this thread, so I"ll just play it safe.

    PennyGuy,

I've often stated that I am not in the same league as most posters on CT, I am know where near as knowledgeable or wealthy as most CT members! But I do have a joy for coins and bullion, both collecting and searching for errors!

    I have in the past held one contest (for a roll of pennies) so that the winner would have something that meant more to me than monetary value! At the same time though, that roll of pennies and S/H would have put some extra gas in my tank or put towards my next silver bar/coin! So with saying those few things, here's my comment to you;

Not EVERYONE is able to simply donate/give away their change!

I already knew I had an expensive hobby (coins) but I still enjoy it, but there is nothing worse than being belittled and told to give money away in a thread that I started due for a joke and also due to being frustrated about receiving foreign coins and not being able to turn around and spend it a few minutes later in the same exact store!

Don't be so rude to me in the future, and turn what I thought was a pretty funny (but true) thread into something else.

    Thanks for reading,

    Chas.

    WoW!!! Yeah to my own,

I CAN'T SPEND THE ****ing CANADIAN COINS I RECEIVE IN MY CHANGE!!!

IGNORANT, AGAIN; I CAN'T ****ing SPEND THIS ***T!

I don't give a damn about the "hammer", I posted this post purely out of frustration because I keep getting those cents so far away from their country and I'm stuck with them.

You show me a person who buys a Lincoln cent from eBay but receives a Canadian cent, yet that buyer is happy, I'll call you a liar!

Canadian money has no place in the U.S. monetary system. IF it did, that same store would have accepted it back!

There is nothing wrong with getting the occasional canadian cent, really just like ours they are place holders.

And as for that "public apology" you just requested from me Snaz, I'll put publicly what I said to you in the PM reply.

A public apology would be appreciated.[/QUOTE]

What, you want an apology because I found another members comments funny... Your PM just beat that!

SCREW your public apology, there's nothing to apologize about!

When will you get it through your THICK head that I CANNOT SPEND CANADIAN MONEY IN AMERICA!

I was under the assumption that I could use a whole bunch of *'s (stars) because a member with that many posts did it first LoL.

I wonder, will I be banned for not taking a persons comments like scripture and replying to them. I guess I'll find out.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about.

When this country was first started, we didn't have our own money. Back then, everyone was on a gold-silver standard. Rates varied a bit, but everyone was pretty close. The world's money circulated freely -- we used coins from several different countries, and they were all accepted as good, based on weight.

In this modern day, coins filter across the northern border with regularity. We that live close to the border are used to seeing them, and are happy to accept them at face value.

I can understand your frustration with not being able to spend them in other parts of the country, but really the difference is small. In fact, for a short while there, Canadian currency was worth more than ours.

Can't we all just get along?

Why didn't you tell the cashier to give you another cent or nickel? I know you can spend them - because if you couldn't I would not keep getting them. I don't mind - got 2 of them and a nickel last week. Into my collecting jar they go. I keep em all - even the UAE coin I got a few weeks ago.

I drop them into charity change boxes at Tim Horton's or at Mickey D's. Generally one can pass them in change in US-Canada border areas, where I live.

I pickout and save the pure nickel Canadian coins. Not many countries used pure nickel for their coins and the RCM is now actively withdrawing them for melt.

    Southern border here.

Didn't check the coins till I was in my car.

But anyway, what I thought was going to be a fun post has turned out to be a total nightmare. No apologies for what I said, BUT I am man enough to apologize that I offended others as that is just not cool at all.

Which ones are pure nickel? I just do not know much about the coinage.

I get 'em daily... live in michigan.

What I hate is when I go to the bank for rolls of quarters & dimes, and get several canadian quarters & dimes in each roll. They spend.. but... I'm looking for american stuff to search thru.

Well, interesting thread. HD, I'm really sorry you feel the way you do about helping YN's, in the instance I cited, the total cost to me, including postage, was something like seventy cents. So the largess involved is not beyond anyone's means.

I'm going to chalk up the response to someone just having a bad day.

I see Canadian cents in change from time to time and don't even think about it for the most part. I do check the dates though to see if I want to keep them though and have found a few really nice older ones. I don't have any problem spending them around here.
When I work the cash register at night I see canadian coins come and go and have never heard a single comment.
It is kind of funny though, I will come across a few while roll searching. If I don't want to keep them i will throw them with my returns, but the bank where I return my coins will usually pull them out and give them back to me.

It seems a little strange, they are so close to par with a US cent there is not much difference. I see a lot of people either toss their cents in the "give a penny/take a penny" jar or just toss them on the ground. With the low value of a cent anymore I don't worry too much if I can spend one or not.
