my fav coin story

so here's the coin...


now for the story. i got this coin when i was 14 for 75¢. yeah, you read that right. the shop that i got it from had a "your choice" bin of ihc's, and i needed a 1908. i was just beginning to collect and didn't know about grades of coins at the time, i just knew 75¢ was right around my price range. it was caked over on the back with that black stuff. after some scraping, i was lucky enough to find the "s" underneath! it may not be in the best of conditions, but considering the price i paid, and the neat story to go with it, i love this coin!

Good story. I don't have anything like that.

 

Just that some of my Morgans are what my grandmother use to give me when I was a little dirt dobber and she was working. I would never get rid of them. One of my favs is the one from the year she was born, 1896.

I had made mention of this in another thread, but I'd gladly relive it again (and again, and again...)




When I was around 18-19, this was the first official coin I "found"...back around the mid 90's, I walked into the local convience store around the corner of my house and purchased a drink and a snack. I paid with a $10 bill and recieved a $5 silver certificate and this 1909 Lincoln as my change. I turned around and sold the $5 SC for about $12 in silver change (mercury dimes, pre-65 Kennedy's, Roosevelt's, Washingtons, etc). Looking back, glad I have the coins I have...but REALLY wish I held onto that $5 bill instead.

not, 1909... more like 1910. j/k. that was in 1994. and like i said, the dirt was caked on the reverse. i thought it was an 1908, like the dealer did. it was only when i got it home that i found the "s".

Just curious. What year does anyone think indian heads disappeared from circulation?

 

i'm not an expert, but i'd venture to guess they circulated until the 1930's when coin collecting became more popular with the introduction of penny boards.

 

Back in the 1980's, I found a 1916 Mercury Dime while helping to clean a church basement. Knowing that I collect coins, the priest allowed me to trade it for a nice clad 1984 Roosevelt dime fresh from the bank. I still have this coin in my collection. If I stare at it long enough I can almost trick myself into seeing a D mint mark on the reverse of that 1916 Merc. TC

 

That is a coll story. Both of them. This is why I am excited to start collecting with my son son 40-50 years from now when I am gone, he can think back on the time we found ----- and remember spending some good quality time with his dad.

Not sure if you have any daughters (yet)? If so, be sure to include them. The women in our family were some of the more devoted coin collectors.

I'm not sure if this counts, but I found an 1864 Indian Head in a cent roll I got at the credit union about a month ago. It is in "Good" condition too!

 

My daughter is 5 right now and as she gets ol definately have her join us. Right now she is more interested in barbies than coins. lol

 

e bay coin story

I love to surf the web and e bay to see whats out there...one never knows what one may find! I was on e bay about 18 months ago...and found a coin that caught my eye.I always check what else a seller might have for sale.

I found a U.S.$1 gold coin and then clicked on to see what else the seller had to sell. They had no idea what they were doing....none what so ever. They had this 1800 $1 gold coin for sale at next to nothing , they also had postage at like .99 cents.
Now this $1 gold coin was well worth over $3000 usd! they were going to ship it for .99 cents.

No I have to tell you what happen next... as I bid all their items a max bid ....Then after thinking about things, I did what I like to think was the right thing to do! I e mailed the seller and ask them to call me. And they did...the next thing I know I am learning about how they came to be the sellers of these fine coins.
The coins were left to the lady by her father....He had on heck of a collection. You name it he had it....she told me her father passed and she went to the North West where her had dad lived he was USAF retired.
She went to see her step mom who had her dad collection.
When she arrived she was surprized to learn that she was going to have to call her husban to rent a truck to bring it back to the Mid-West where they lived.
Now I'm telling her that she does not know what she has ,and needs to buy a red book and some mags' to learn alittle about coins. I also told her of the SHARKS on e bay as well as on the web and not to sell anything until she got the collection appraised. I knew that someone would buy the US 1$ gold and then say that they never received it. After all she was shiping for .99 cents with no delivery comformation or sigatured required.
With all said and done she sold off most of the collection to a shop in town where she lived. She did sell me some Jefferson Nickles I wanted at a fair price...funny thro that I was honest with her money $$$$ did get the best of her.......she wanted to take a cruise and went for fast money and selling for less than what the collection was worth. I got some great Jefferson nickles from her mostly errors. I never went for the gold coins she had .. as she took the Red Book as being the true value.....and it just got too crazy with me being on the right coast and her beinin the mid west.
Now some may question my smarts after all I could of for less than a $1000.00 usd taken her for at least 20 grand on her first 10 e bay listings alone.
She did tell me that her dad was a wheeler dealer and that he had collected coins ever since she could remember. She also told me that one time her dad took some of his coins to the USAF base to kind of show and tell. And they sent him home with armed guards.

Her dad left her a small fortune in coins...I'm glad that she got what was due her by her birth right....so many times family and friends and money don't mix.......I loss touch with her after a few months ...her cruise booked and her and her hubby ready to spend some of their money on a vacation to remember.

I always remember something my late mother told me " Never do to another person...that you would not want another person to do to Me" Thanks Mom....all that glitters is not gold you are so right.....! :thumb:
